The Lincoln Continental Town Car was the quintessential American luxury car during the 1970s, and it was one of the priciest sedans available. The term 'Town Car' was from the early coachbuilding traditions and body style in which the rear passenger seats were covered and the front seats were exposed to the elements. These types of cars were intended to be chauffeur driven and gave the passengers a high degree of privacy and comfort.
The 1976 Lincoln Continental Town Car could be ordered in a number of exclusive designer variants, including the Cartier, Bill Blass and Givenchy editions.
The Town Car specification could be had for an additional $731 and, among other items, featured special identification scripts on the front fenders, a vinyl roof and coach lamps on the center pillar.
The Town Car became its own model in the 1980s, and it has continued as such ever since.
This example is a one-owner car that has been on display in the Saratoga Automobile Museum. It was fully restored in the mid-1990s and remains in excellent condition. It has power steering, brakes, windows and door locks, plus factory sunroof and air conditioning. The paint is red with a white vinyl roof and matching velour interior. The engine is a 460 cubic-inch V-8 engine capable of producing 202 horsepower. There are a three-speed automatic transmission and an impendent front suspension with coil springs.
IN 2009, this car was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Hershey presented by RM Auctions where it was estimated to sell for $5,000 - $10,000 and offered without reserve. The lot was sold for the sum of $1,100 including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2009
