1950 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Navigation
The new-for-1949 Oldsmobile line had styling themed after the aircraft industry and based on Harley Earl's Art & Colour Section. The cars had a one-piece windshield with the top of the line model being the 98. The big news, however, was under the hood, with the modern and powerful overhead valve 'Rocket' V8 engine. The 303 cubic-inch unit had a low 7.25:1 compression ratio, but designed for levels as high as 12:1, in anticipation of higher-octane fuels.
The Oldsmobile had a first-place finish in the inaugural Carrera Panamericana of 1949, as well as the first NASCAR championships. With nearly 294,000 vehicles sold in 1949, Oldsmobile had an impressive 64 percent increase over 1948.
This 98 Four-Door Sedan is finished in black and has an odometer that reads just 35,976 miles. There is a steel sun visor, red painted steel wheels, bright wheel covers, Coker Classic wide whitewall tires, original upholstery, traffic light viewer, a Super Deluxe AM radio and a dash-mounted electric clock.
In 2009, this Four-Door Sedan was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Hershey presented by RM Auctions where it was estimated to sell for $30,000 - $50,000. The lot was sold for the sum of $18,700, including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2009
