The originator of this Mercedes-Benz 380K Special was Prinz Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe, a direct descendant of Katherine the Great of Austria and an accomplished race driver. In 1934 he ordered a specially designed 380 chassis and a supercharged M221 engine and commissioned Erdmann & Rossi in Berlin to build a body suitable for both racing and touring. With many design features taken from his early 380SS, like double spare wheels, oversize fuel tank and long hood line, this car won the Gold Medal in the 4 Litre Class at the Deutschland 2000 Kilometer race. After being restored to her 1934 condition, this 380K Special Roadster won the Mercedes-Benz Trophy at the Pebble Beach Concours in 1996.
