1970 Porsche 917 Coupé

  • Chassis Number: 917-022
Sold in 1969 to Solar Productions, Chassis 022 was used extensively in filming Le Mans. It was the primary car driven by Steve McQueen during staged race sequences for the film. Film production lasted from June into November of 1970. The car was then raced by Team Auto Usadau during 1971 with the primary drivers being Willi Kauhsen and Reinhold Joest. It recorded several good finishes in World Championship races and a second-place finish, driven by Jo Siffert, in a non-championship race at Vallelunga. Chassis 022 was acquired by Brian Redman in 1975, then sold to Richard Attwood in 1978. Attwood used the car in several vintage races and exhibitions over the next two decades. For several years it was painted in red Porsche-Salzburg livery to resemble Attwood's 1970 Le Mans-winning car. Repainted in Gulf Le Mans colors, it was then sold at the Monterey RM Auction in 2000 to Frank Gallogly. Chassis 022 was acquired in 2001 by the current owner, Jerry Seinfeld, and appeared at Pebble Beach in 2009.
