Much about this vehicle is still unknown, and some of its histories is questionable.
J.M Worth of 2833 Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago was among the earliest American producers. Production lasted for only a short time, from 1899 to 1901, after which the company produced concentrated on engines. It is important to note that the Chicago Motor Vehicle Company made William O Worth cars. Worth had formed the Chicago Motor Vehicle Company in the suburb of Harvey in Chicago with Donaldson and Kellogg in 1899. The Chicago Motor Vehicle Company made cars they called Worths.
This original example, a potential candidate for the London-to-Brighton Veteran Car Run, is completely original, except for the two Model T Ford Carburetors on its engine. It is believed to be in running condition, though it has not been started for a long time. It was brought to auction from a prominent Australian museum that is now closed.
The exact date of production is not known and is assumed to be 1899. 1899 seems to be the most logical because that is when William O. Worth submitted his patents, so at least one car must have been made that year. It could also be a 1900 or 1901 model.
In 2009, this vehicle was offered for sale by Bonhams Auction at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club in Carmel, CA. As bidding came to a close, the lot had been sold for the sum of $46,800 inclusive of the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2009
