1984 Lola T616 Coupe

  • Chassis Number: HU2
At the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Lola T616 won the C2 class with John Morton, John O'Steen and Hoshami Katayama piloting Mazda to its first victory at Le Mans. The car continued its success with two second place finishes at Nurburgring and at Fuji.

When the Lola T616 Mazda first took to the track, it featured a modified 13B rotary engine and was rated at 300 horsepower. The T616 lacked the displacement of competitors' engines, but more than made up for this short-coming with high-revving reliability and the engine's small size and low weight.

Sold and entered in various championships until the beginning of the 1990s, the two Lola T616s were then set aside. Jim Busby and Rick Knoop, two drivers who participated in the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans, decided to buy and restore them. Since 2004, they have taken part in many gatherings like the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and the Laguna Seca Pre-Reunion.
