1962 Lancia Flaminia Navigation
When Lancia replaced its flagship Aurelia model, they did so with a Gran Turismo that was up to the task of carrying on the legend. The new vehicle made its debut in 1957 and was called the Flaminia, and was previewed in two prototypes (the Florida and Florida II) prepared by Pinin Farina. The second prototype, the Florida II, would later become Batista Farina's personal car.
For 1962, the Flaminia could be purchased in sedan or roadster guise, a Farina coupe, or a Fastback Coupe with coachwork by Zagato. The Zagato two-seater coupe had the firm's trademark 'double bubble' roofline and pop-out door handles.
This Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato is one of approximately 152 Series 2 examples built. It is a two-owner car that has 48,000 kilometers from new. It has its original red leather interior and an exterior repaint done several years ago in 'Newmarket Grigo,' a pale silver.
The original owner was from Zurich, Switzerland, who retained the car from 1962 to 1971 and used it sparingly. The second owner purchased the car having only 6,000 kilometers at the time. The car was used by the second owner mostly for pleasure trips until 1996. At that time, it was put into storage.
Since new, the car has been given a mechanical restoration, including a refreshing of the engine and mechanical systems. Late in the car's life, it left Switzerland and was brought to California in the United States. In 2008, it was put on display at the Motorsports Gathering at the Quail Lodge.
In 2009, this Bentley S2 Continental Drop Head Coupe was offered for sale at the Sports & Classics of Monterey auction in Monterey, California, presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $120,000-$160,000. The lot was sold for $132,000, including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Sep 2012
