In 1932, Packard's lineup of 8-cylinder cars was joined by the re-introduction of a new V12 Twin Six, which was installed in a new chassis and offered with a staggering 21 different body styles, including six designs by Raymond Dietrich.
This Dietrich-bodied Packard is one of only four 904 Deluxe Eight Dietrich Convertible Victoria models produced in 1932. For the past 50 years, it has resided in some of the finest car collections ever assembled including John Mozart and Otis Chandler. In fact, Chandler liked it so much that he bought this car twice.
In April 1932, this individual Custom Eight was sold by Packard's New York agency on Park Avenue to the first in a long line of appreciative caretakers. While the earliest history has been lost to time, by the early 1950s it was found in the care of Russell Lewis, a genuine connoisseur and one of the founding members of the Classic Car Club of America. Some of the other owners throughout the years are Otis Chandler (who owned it two different times), John Mozart, and Matt Browning.
The car is powered by a 385 cubic-inch L-Head, inline, eight-cylinder engine, fitted with a single updraft carburetor. The 135-horsepower engine is coupled to a three-speed, synchromesh gearbox. The car is fitted with a high-ratio axle that allows for more relaxed high-speed cruising. Stopping is performed by four-wheel, vacuum-assisted, drum brakes. This car was restored more than 20 years ago but remains in excellent condition.
