Sold for $184,800 at 2021 Bonhams : Amelia Island Auction.
The Inter-State Automobile Co. of Muncie, IN, began production in 1909.

This Bulldog 50 model ran in the first Indy 500 race in 1911. Driven by Harry Endicott, it started in 3rd place and was still running at the end of the race, finishing in 16th place out of 40 entrants. Only the top 12 finishers were paid, so this car fell short of any money from the race.

Unfortunately, the company fell into receivership in the fall of 1913. In February 1914, Frank C. Ball (one of the original Inter-State investors) bought the factory. In May of 1918, automobile production was suspended in favor of war work. In 1919, they attempted to resume building automobiles but soon sold out to General Motors for them to produce their new Sheridan.

Few examples of the Inter-States survive today, and this is the most famous.

This Inter-State was given a restoration by Stu Laidlaw around an original 1911 Inter-State chassis and correct 50bhp engine. The bodywork restoration is believed to have been completed by Stan Francis of Colorado. It has leather seats and paintwork in the Indianapolis livery.

After the work was completed, the car toured in several events, including in the 2000 California Classic Rally. In 2010 the car received Best in Class at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.

In 2010 the car was acquired by the Lange collection and shown at several concours events including Ault Park and Louisville, as well as at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's own Celebration of Automobiles.

This Inter-State is powered by a 389.9 cubic-inch T-Head four-cylinder engine fitted with a Schebler carburetor and delivering 50 horsepower (ALAM rated). The engine is backed by a three-speed manual transmission and there are rear-wheel drum brakes. The suspension is comprised of leaf springs with a solid front and live rear axle.
