1949 DeSoto Custom Series Navigation
In 1946, Chrysler's DeSoto marque introduced the S-11 Series. It would remain unchanged for over three years, even entering the 1949 model year. On March 1, 1949, the second-series 1949 model, named the S-13, was introduced. It was advertised as 'The car designed with you in mind.' Changes included shorter front overhangs, updated styling to the grille, and the tail lamps now resided in narrow housings that emerged from the top surface of the rear fenders.
Concealed under the bonnet was a six-cylinder L-head engine, the same as found in the prior model's engine bay, however, the horsepower was given a boost thanks to a new cylinder head that raised compression to a 7:1 ratio.
Sales were strong for DeSoto in 1949, earning it a 13th-place spot among American brands, surpassing Packard.
This Custom Convertible Coupe is one of 3,385 produced in 1949. It came from the factory fitted with ornamental chrome trim on the fender sections closest to the cabin, whitewall tires, and dashboard amenities such as push-button radio and clock.
In 2005, the car was restored and finished in lime green paint exterior and tanned hide interior in a two-tone scheme of walnut brown with panels finished in a matching shade of green.
The current owner acquired the car in 20007. Accompanying the car was the original jack and spare.
In 2010, this DeSoto Custom was offered for sale at Gooding & Company Auction held in Amelia Island, Florida. The car was estimated to sell for $50,000 - $75,000. As bidding came to a close, the car was sold for $27,500, including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2010
