Shelby American updated the aging 289 Competition Cobra in 1964 with plans to produce 100 updated examples for the 1965 FIA World Manufacturers Championship homologation. Internally, the project was known as the MKII. The new car was modified to accept Ford's 427 side oiler engine. Ultimately, Shelby America would build 51 of the upgraded 427 MKIIs, which meant FIA inspector's denied the new Cobra the ability to compete. Only 19 of the 51 were produced as 427 Competition Cobras. This particular vehicle, chassis number CSX3006, is one of the nineteen pure 27 Competition Cobras produced and one of the first 427 competition chassis sold to a private team.

Fast forward a few years to 2009, when the car was brought to London and offered for sale at auction. It had a pre-auction estimate of £600,000 - £790,000. As bidding came to a close, the car was left unsold after having received a high bid of £525,000.

Since then the car has been shown at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, 2014 Concorso Villa d'Este, and 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed. It has also been shown at the Amelia Island Concours and the Concours d'Elegance of America at The Inn at St. John's.

The car is returning to Amelia Island in March of 2019, this time to RM Sotheby's Amelia Island auction. This time, the pre-auction estimates are $3 - $4 million. So get in your time machine, go back to 2009 and purchase the car. Enjoy it for a decade, take it to all the major concours events, and then bring it back to auction for a substantial return on your investment.
