When Ferrari introduced their 365 GT 2+2 at the 1967 Paris Salon, it was the most luxurious and largest Ferrari model to date. The Pininfarina designed, low-slung fastback represented the growing demand for high-speed transport with accommodation for up to four passengers. They were the first Ferrari to be equipped with standard power steering and power brakes. They were also the company's first 2+2 with a self-leveling independent rear suspension.
Power was equally impressive, displacing 4.4-liters from the single overhead camshaft V12 and fitted with three Weber carburetors offering about 320 horsepower. Inside was a comfortable presence with plus leather, veneered trim panels, and the last wood-rimmed steering wheel in a production Ferrari. Air conditioning, a stereo, and power windows came standard, completing the interior appointments. Production continued through 1971 with approximately 800 examples produced, accounting for half of Ferrari production in its three-year run.
This example is chassis number 13795. It was built for the European market and later imported to the United States by Thomas Crohman in the late-1970s. By the mid-1980s, the car was in Southern California. At that point, it was given an engine and transmission overhaul by Modena Sport Cars Inc. in West Hollywood, at which time the odometer showed 91,000 kilometers. In 1992, still under the same ownership, the front suspension was also rebuilt. In 2000, the carburetors were rebuilt, as was the starter.
The previous owner purchased the car in 2003. Various maintenance followed, including rebuilding the alternator, tuning and balancing the carburetor, a distributor service and tune, the replacement of the spark plug wires and voltage regulator, the replacement of select front and rear suspension bushings and the rear shocks (a conversion to coil over units), servicing of the CV joints, the replacement of window motors and fuel pumps, a re-coring of the radiator, and the replacement of the ignition switch, as well as the starter.
The paint is believed to be the original color. It rides on the correct Cromodora wheels and it has a matching spare. The leather upholstery is original as is the headliner and dash wood. The engine bay is largely original and correct, including the battery hold down and air cleaner housing.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2013
