The Eldorado was the first of the three nameplates to appear, literally as a dream car called El Dorado (two words), to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cadillac brand in 1952. The name, which alludes to the mythical Lost City of Gold, sought by Spanish Conquistadors, was submitted in a contest by a secretary in Cadillac's merchandising department.
The production version introduced at the 1953 Motorama, with the Eldorado name as a single word, was a near-duplicate of the dream car. And Earl's wraparound windshield, mounted within a bronze frame casting, was the styling tour de force that set it off. The low 'panoramic' windshield enabled something of a customizer's 'chopped-top' look when the top was raised.
The car also differed from the conventional Series 62 C-Body convertible on which it was based with a distinctive dropped beltline, notched at the back of the door - not unlike the famed 'Darrin dip' found on many Packards and other Darrin-designed models.
Other unique Eldorado features included a painted metal tonneau cover for the retracted top, which itself was made of synthetic Orlon material. And it rode on wide whitewalls, on real wire wheels.
Inside, there were leather seats, a leather-finished instrument-panel crash pad that swept back into the doors, faired-in armrests, simulated leather hand grips on the steering wheel, chrome garnishes on the side sills and kick panels, and lots of extra chrome plate everywhere.
Standard equipment included fog lamps, outside mirrors and inside vanity mirrors, power steering, power windows, and a two-way power seat - hydraulic - as well as a signal-seeking pre-selector radio, a dual heater, and windshield washers. 'E-Z Eye' tinted glass and an 'Aytronic Eye' automatic headlamp dimmer were the only factory-installed options. All very advanced stuff for the time.
The Eldorado shared its 210 horsepower, 331 cubic-inch V8 engine, and four-speed Hydramatic transmission with the rest of the Cadillac range. Power brakes were not available.
Priced at $7,750 USD, the Eldorado costs more than double the price of the until-then range-topping Fleetwood 75 limousine. So naturally, it became the piece-de-resistance for movie stars and other status-seekers of the day.
While available in only four standard colors, Aztec Red, Azure Blue, Alpine White, and Artisan Ochre, a few of the 532 Eldorados built in 1953 were painted black by the factory.
