In 1933, at the depths of the Great Depression, Packard produced only 4,800 automobiles. This would be the lowest production year for Packard since 1916. Of these, only 1,099 Packard Eights were produced in the 1002 series. The company did, however, manage to make a $500,000 profit on the series. This was very commendable since many other manufacturers of the day were being forced into bankruptcy in the 1930s.
The Model 1002 Convertible Victoria model carried a $2,780 price tag and was one of the more expensive body styles available. It is believed that fewer than 100 Convertible Victoria's were produced in 1933, a very small percentage for the 1,099 Eight chassis built.
Packard's tenth series was known for many automotive firsts. Among these were skirted front fenders, down draft carburetors, an automatic choke and an engine entirely anchored in rubber. Standard equipment included a 19-point self-lubricating chassis, adjustable brake and shock absorbers, three-position headlights, and dual taillights. A pivoted pane window ventilation system was also offered exclusively in 1933.
This tenth-series Packard 1002 Convertible Victoria is finished in a spectacular cream color. The convertible feature was a nod to the Great Depression, allowing the owner to use it as a fully enclosed car when desired in all weather conditions.
