2008 Subaru Forester

2008 Subaru Forester
Subaru of America, Inc., has introduced two new Sports versions of the Forester compact sport-utility vehicle for 2007, which had received a restyling for the 2006 model year. The new Forester Sports 2.5 X model combines added style with enhanced standard equipment. The Forester Sports 2.5 XT adds to that the 224-hp intercooled turbo Boxer engine from the 2.5 XT Limited model, giving customers access to the turbo's scorching performance at a lower price point. For 2007, the Forester is offered in six versions (up from four). The 2.5 X, Sports 2.5 X, 2.5 X with Premium Package, and L.L Bean Edition models are all powered by a 173-hp 2.5-liter Boxer engine. Models powered by this engine achieve Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) certification for California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Vermont – with the same power output as the 45-state emissions certified model. In addition, all Forester models powered by this engine achieve EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg highway with the 5-speed manual transmission, and 23/28 mpg with the optional 4-speed automatic.

All Forester models come standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a significant all-road, all-weather traction advantage over competitors that offer front-wheel drive as standard and make All-Wheel Drive an extra-cost option. Three versions of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive are used in the 2007 Forester line. Exclusive to the Forester Sports 2.5 XT with the optional automatic transmission is the Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) version of the system, along with the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability system and four-wheel traction control.

Continuous Improvement, and New Sports Models
The Forester Sports 2.5 XT and 2.5 XT Limited models feature new standard 17-inch alloy wheels in place of the previous 16-inch alloy wheels on the 2.5 XT Limited. On all but the 2.5 X base model, the standard audio system has been upgraded to play MP3/WMA CDs and offers SIRIÚS® Satellite Radio Capability. All but the 2.5 X base model gain a new auxiliary audio input jack that accommodates iPods and similar music players. New bottle holders on the inside front door trim replace net pockets.

The new Forester Sports models are distinguished from the others by a new front bumper and unique black mesh grille. For a sleeker profile, the roof rail crossbars have been deleted on the Sports models, but remain available as an accessory. Inside, the Sports 2.5 X and Sports 2.5 XT feature exclusive anthracite black fabric upholstery, as well as an automatic climate control system.

'Best of Both Worlds' and A Proven Safety Champ
The Subaru Forester pioneered the 'Best of Both Worlds' crossover SÚV design approach that blends positive SÚV attributes -- such as a command driving position and interior versatility – with the comfort and driving dynamics of a passenger car. Four-wheel independent suspension, variable-ratio, variable-power assisted rack-and-pinion steering and standard 16-inch wheels help make Forester models equally adept at managing twisty back roads and absorbing off-pavement ruts and bumps.

The Subaru Forester earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) highest rating ('Good') in both the side impact crashworthiness evaluation and 40-mph frontal offset crash tests, and the IIHS called Forester the 'best small SÚV' it had tested. In addition, Forester earned the highest rating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests. The Forester received 5-star ratings in the frontal and side-impact crash tests for both the driver and passenger seating positions.

Responsive Power, Responsible Performance
The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine that powers all Forester 2.5 X models is among the most powerful in its displacement category, with 173 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. The i-Active Valve Lift system helps to ensure responsive performance at all engine speeds.
The turbocharged/intercooled 2.5-liter engine in the Forester Sports 2.5 XT and 2.5 XT Limited models produces 224 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 226 lb.-ft. of peak torque at just 3,600 rpm for powerful responsiveness in everyday driving conditions.

The turbo engine also offers outstanding performance at high altitudes, where changes in atmospheric pressure adversely affect the power output of naturally aspirated engines. The Active Valve Control System variable valve timing technology optimizes the engine's volumetric efficiency and performance at all engine speeds. When equipped with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the Forester 2.5 XT models can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under six seconds. The turbo engine meets the strict Tier 2 Bin 5 Low Emissions Vehicle II (LEV II) certification.

All Forester models equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission feature the Hill Holder System that makes accelerating from a stop on a hill easier and safer. The available 4-speed direct control electronic automatic transmission uses an advanced adaptive shift control system that adjusts transmission shift points based on driver input and vehicle load to optimize engine performance. Slope control provides engine braking on declines. This transmission automatically and transparently selects between 'Normal' and 'Sport' modes in response to the driver's throttle input – there's no need to manually select a mode.

Versatility
Forester offers intelligent packaging design, giving it the versatility expected in larger models, but with greater agility and fuel efficiency. The multi-function front center console between the front seats integrates a combination storage box and sliding armrest that contains dual cupholders, and the console can also be flipped 180 degrees to provide rear seat cupholders.

All Forester models feature a standard 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback with one-touch operation for a flat load floor. A fold-down seat armrest in the rear seatback provides additional passenger comfort. In models without the moonroof, the 30.7 cubic feet of carrying space behind the rear seat expands to 68.6 cu. ft. when both rear seatbacks are folded. In models with the moonroof, cargo capacity is 28.9 cu. ft., which expands to 64.5 cu. ft. with the rear seatbacks down. The standard retractable cargo area cover sits high enough to accommodate tall packages. Cargo capability is enhanced by the standard cargo area utility bars and four utility hooks located in the upper side trim.

A side storage panel contains a convenient 12-volt power outlet, and a second 12-volt outlet is located in the front center console. Roof rails and crossbars are standard on all Forester models (crossbars are an accessory on the Sports models), and Subaru dealers offer a selection of Genuine Subaru Accessory attachments for carrying bicycles, kayaks and other equipment.

Freedom of Choice and Outstanding Value
Forester truly offers a model for any need or taste. The Forester 2.5 X base model starts as one of the best-equipped small SÚVs on the market, featuring as standard equipment front seat head/chest side-impact airbags, four-wheel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, cabin air filtration system, AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and four speakers, power windows, mirrors and door locks, and a remote keyless entry system.

The 2.5 X Premium Package enhances driving performance by adding rear disc brakes, 8-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels and a viscous limited-slip rear differential. The Premium Package delivers a significant upgrade to passenger comfort and convenience, as well, adding a power tilt/sliding glass moonroof, dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors, a windshield wiper de-icer, automatic climate control system, 8-way power driver's seat, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, upgraded speakers and leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter handle and parking brake handle. The upgraded audio system also includes an auxiliary audio jack for portable media players (such as iPods) and SIRIÚS Satellite Radio capability.
All Forester models except the base 2.5 X feature body-color side mirrors with integrated turn signals (mirrors not heated on Sports models).

The L.L.Bean Edition remains the top normally aspirated Forester model and combines the Premium Package with a standard 4-speed direct control automatic transmission and comes equipped with exclusive additional luxury and utility features. The L.L.Bean Edition is also the only Forester model identified by a two-tone appearance, with all colors contrasted by Úrban Gray Metallic bumpers and lower body side cladding. Self-leveling rear suspension, exclusive to this model, helps maintain the ride level even when driving with a full load. The interior features standard beige leather-trimmed upholstery, and the L.L.Bean logo-embossed front seats are complemented by perforated Alcantara® side bolsters.

A MOMO® leather-wrapped and real wood-insert steering wheel and matching-design shifter handle add to the luxurious character. For added convenience, a durable and water-resistant surface covers the cargo area floor, rear seatback and cargo area sidewalls. The standard security system in this model is augmented by a shock sensor. The Forester L.L.Bean Edition is the second vehicle offered as part of a strategic marketing partnership between Subaru of America, Inc. and the renowned retailer of active-lifestyle clothing and equipment. Subaru has also offered an Outback L.L.Bean Edition since 2001.

The turbocharged Forester 2.5 XT Limited model includes the Premium Package and in addition features leather-trimmed upholstery and exclusive exterior and interior trim. On both the Sports 2.5 XT and 2.5 XT Limited, a functional hood scoop provides a stream of fresh air to the engine-mounted intercooler. Both turbo models also feature new 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels (replacing 16-inch alloy wheels on the 2006 2.5 XT Limited) and luminescent instrument panel needle pointers.

Three Types of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive forms the common core technology on all Subaru models.
With more brands adding All-Wheel Drive, it is worth noting that Subaru introduced four-wheel drive passenger cars more than 30 years ago and automatic full-time All-Wheel Drive 20 years ago.
In 1997, Subaru became the first brand in the Ú.S. to make All-Wheel Drive standard on all its models.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a total system that integrates a lightweight horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine and the full-time power transfer system. The Boxer engine and a simple, symmetrical drivetrain layout help to lower the center of gravity, which in turn contributes to precision handling response. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides the safety benefit of optimal traction for all driving conditions.

The Forester line features three versions of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, all of which power all four wheels all the time and can transfer more power to the wheels with the best grip. In all models equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission, a viscous coupling locking center differential built into the transmission case divides engine power 50:50. Wheel slippage at one set of wheels causes more power to shift to the opposite set, ensuring that the wheels with the best traction receive more power.

In Forester models equipped with the 4-speed electronic direct control automatic transmission (except Sports 2.5 XT), an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively manages power distribution based on acceleration, deceleration and available traction. All-Wheel Drive control logic enhances stability by monitoring individual wheel speeds and reacting quickly to wheel slippage. The control logic helps to improve tight corner braking, contributing to neutral handling response (reduced understeer and oversteer). At cruising speeds, under light throttle, the system optimizes power distribution to enhance fuel efficiency.

The Forester Sports 2.5 XT with the optional 4-speed direct control automatic transmission uses the Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The VTD automatic transmission uses a planetary gear-type center differential that splits the power 45:55, with the rear-wheel bias enhancing handling agility and the performance driving feel.

An electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch controls power distribution between the front and rear wheels in response to driver input and driving conditions. Also exclusive to this model is Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), an advanced stability system that controls VTD operation and integrates an electronic 4-wheel traction control system (TCS). Traction control functions as a second line of defense against wheelslip, after VTD All-Wheel Drive.

In the Forester 2.5 X Premium Package, L.L.Bean Ediition and both turbo models, a standard viscous limited-slip rear differential directs power to the rear wheel with the best traction.

Advanced Safety Construction
Forester meets all Federal passenger car safety standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com) The Ring Frame Reinforced body structure incorporates a hydroformed front subframe and tailored-blank welded structural elements. The standard Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) include the dual-stage deployment Subaru Advanced Front Air Bag System and front seat head/chest side-impact air bags. Also standard are upper-trim head impact protection and front seatbelt pre-tensioners with force limiters.

Front-seat active head restraints help to minimize whiplash injury. All five seating positions are equipped with three-point seatbelts (height-adjustable on the four outboard positions), and each rear seat position has a headrest. A safety pedal system is designed to yield during a serious frontal impact to help reduce injury to the driver's lower limbs. Forester's 5-mph front and rear bumpers exceed the Federal 2.5 mph bumper standard.
