1975 Triumph TR6

The Triumph TR6, although related to the 1950's era TR2, was vastly different from the bare-bones roadsters. Designer Giovanni Michelotti was given the task of modernizing the popular TR4 and TR5 convertibles, seeing the birth of the TR-250. The same basic design was selected for the new 6-cylinder TR6, but with some modifications and revisions, primarily to the back-end design by Karmann in Germany. The result was an aggressively-looking sports car with equally impressive performance.

The TR6 had pile carpets on the floor and in the trunk, plush-looking bucket seats, a wooden dashboard, and a full complement of instrumentation.

The examples exported to the United States were given carburetors, while the European versions received fuel injection. The fuel injection system provided more power, but the carbureted versions were more dependable and were emissions compliant. The six-cylinder carbureted engine was carried over from the TR250, while the UK version was from the TR5 and included the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system. The 2.5-liter fuel-injected engine produced 150 horsepower in 1969. The over-head valve carbureted engine displaced 152.4 cubic inches and produced just over 100 horsepower. It had two Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, a cast-iron block and head, four main bearings, and solid valve lifters. Disc brakes were in the front, while drums were in the back.

The TR5 had an 88-inch wheelbase, an overall length of 155.5 inches, a width of 61 inches, and a height of 50 inches. It received traditional body-on-frame construction, and all TR6s were powered by the company's 2.5-liter straight-6 engine. The TR6 continued the TR tradition of having an overdrive option which greatly enhanced the car's performance

Production lasted from 1969 to 1976, with more than 94,000 examples built. Ninety percent of those were built to U.S. specification (83,480 examples were exported, and 8,370 remained in the United Kingdom). This was Triumph's best-selling car of the TR range.

An extremely successful sports car, the Triumph TR4 was produced in the U.K. by the Standard Triumph Motor Company from 1961. With a top speed of 110 mph, and costing around £1095, the TR4 became one of Triumphs best-loved cars thanks to its low cost of entry and capable open-top sports capabilities. The TR4 was stylistically quite a departure from its predecessor the TR3 and seemed to be just the....

The Triumph TR6 was an updated version of the TR5, which itself was basically a TR4A with a beefy pushrod six-cylinder engine in place of a four. The TR5 had a new fuel-injection (PI for Petrol Injection) system, which did not fully comply with U.S. emission standards. So in place of the TR5 PI version with its 150 horsepower, the US received a twin-carburetor TR250 model, which produced 104 horsepower.....
