RECORDS FALL AT RACE RETRO AUCTION
February 23, 2015 by Silverstone AuctionsSilverstone Auctions started the year strongly, achieving no less than four world record prices, a sales rate of 78 per cent and total sales of £3.62 million in its sale at Race Retro this weekend. Classic Ferraris remain in high demand, with two cars by the marque breaking world records at the prestigious auction. A staggeringly low mileage 1991 Testarossa with an accompanying five-piece Ferrari luggage set sold for a premium inclusive total of £202,500, a huge £72,500 over its lower estimate and a new world record price. A rare and sought after 1999 456M, with just 400 miles on the clock and only one previous owner, was bought for another record breaking £118,125. One of the sale's most eye catching cars was a 1991 Alfa Romeo SZ. Attracting interest in the room as well as online and over the phone, the rare model had just 808km on its odometer and fetched a world record price of £84, 938; more than £30, 000 over its lower estimate. A highly desirable 1973 Porsche 911 2.4S with an extensive history file sold for £114,750, more than £20,000 over of its lower estimate price of £90,000. With interest in Targas rising, this car presented an exciting investment opportunity for collectors. Commenting on the sale, Managing Director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale said: 'This is another great set of results for our vendors and gives a promising and exciting outlook for the year ahead.' One of the sale's most unique lots was a 1955 Volkswagen Type 2 Samba Microbus which fetched £67,500. The first Type 2 Samba imported into the UK and an important piece of Volkswagen history, the Samba had been perfectly restored and is thought to be the only surviving example of the few Wolfsburg-built examples that were imported into the UK. A number of historic motorcycles were also presented, with a rare 1965 Triumph 'Thruxton' Bonneville breaking the fourth world record of the sale, reaching an impressive £21, 938. 13 race cars were sold at the sale, with one of the most fascinating models offered being a 2010 Aston Martin Vantage GT2 Chassis 007. Sold for an impressive £105,750, the model was the Le Mans support race winner, entered by Villois Racing for drivers Filippi and Lavio. It also competed in six rounds of the GT Open series, with Guerrrero winning the Pro-Am race at Brands Hatch.
