2006 Volkswagen Golf

2006 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF OFFERS STREAMLINED, SIMPLIFIED LINE-UP Golf models remain among the most fuel efficient Volkswagens available today.

Selecting a Volkswagen Golf to match your driving style and needs just got easier. For 2006, a new line-up offers three models in two trim levels: the Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0L, and Golf GLS 2.0L and GLS TDI®. Next year, Volkswagen plans to introduce an all-new version of one of the world's most popular cars ever. The current 2006 Golf GLS TDI is the choice for drivers seeking the maximum fuel economy that can be provided only by one of the most advanced diesel automotive engines in history, plus the driving dynamics only available with true German engineering, and all of the utility that can be found only in a 'five-door' hatchback, all at a great value.

Volkswagen is a leader in automotive diesel engine development, and at the heart of the 2006 Golf GLS TDI is one of Volkswagen's most technically advanced diesel automotive engines to date. The 1.9-liter turbocharged, in-line four-cylinder diesel engine features new Pumpe Düse technology. With Bosch® high-pressure injectors at each cylinder, fuel is ultra-atomized for better combustion and a more complete burn, resulting in increased power, improved efficiency, reduced emissions, and quieter engine operation.

The 2006 Golf GLS 2.0L offers many of the same features as the Golf TDI, with one obvious exception: Volkswagen's 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine is used in place of the diesel engine. Technical enhancements, including aluminum alloy cross flow cylinder heads and Motronic sequential multi-point fuel injection, are combined with the simplicity and efficiency of a single overhead camshaft and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters for carefree motoring with notable gasoline-engine fuel economy.

2006 Volkswagen GolfFinally, the 2006 Golf GL 2.0L features many of the most sought-after features found in the GLS models, eliminating the need for extensive optioning and offering drivers a true value package. Of course, as with all Volkswagens, style and dependability are 'givens' with any Golf.

Regardless of which engine is under the hood of your Golf, they are always transversely mounted to better fit in the relatively compact engine bay. Front wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission are standard on all Golf models, with a four-speed automatic and floor mounted kick-down switch available as an option on GL and GLS 2.0L models. The Golf TDI model offers the option of a five-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® driver-selected gear shifting.

The new 1.9-liter engine in the 2006 Volkswagen Golf GLS TDI develops 100 horsepower at 4,000 revolutions per minute and a maximum torque of 177 ft.-lbs. from 1,800 to 2,400 rpm. Electronically controlled direct fuel injection helps the Golf GLS TDI achieve an EPA fuel economy rating of up to 44 miles per gallon on the highway and 37 mpg in the city, good for a cruising range of up to 638 miles on a 14.5-gallon fill-up.

The Golf GL and GLS 2.0-liter engine produces 115 hp at 5,200 rpm and develops maximum torque of 122 ft.-lbs. at 2,600 rpm. The EPA fuel economy rating for the Golf GL and GLS 2.0L is up to 31mpg highway and 24 mpg city.

Regardless of model or configuration, the 2006 Volkswagen Golf includes the extra utility of its hatchback design. In 'five-door' form, the Golf optimizes passenger space and maximizes cargo and hauling capacity. Passenger volume of 88 cubic foot comfortably seats five. Cargo volume is nearly 42 cu. ft. with the split rear seat folded down.

Exterior styling includes softened edges all around, giving the 2006 Golf a European flair. Body-color grille and mirror housings are standard on all trim levels and hint at the Golf's performance. Minimized body panel gaps add an upscale appearance.

Heated exterior mirrors, a rear window wiper/washer and 15-inch all-season radial tires are standard. Additionally, GLS models feature a power sunroof and alloy wheels as standard equipment.

Trademark blue gauges with red indicators plus fully reclining, height adjustable front seats, a height adjustable and telescoping four-spoke padded steering wheel, and chrome trim and accents highlight the interiors of all 2006 Golf models. A premium in-dash radio with CD and cassette player and eight-speaker sound is standard. The GLS model is equipped as standard with a Monsoon® Sound System including an amplifier and eight speakers. Golf GLS models also feature a folding and adjustable front center armrest with storage compartment and molded door trim with velour inserts.

A host of safety equipment comes built-in with every Volkswagen automobile. Side Curtain Protection® provides added safety for front and rear passengers. The airbag supplemental restraint provides head and thorax protection against side glass and roof pillars and keeps shattered glass from flying into the cabin.

Driver and front passenger front airbag supplemental restraints and front passenger side thorax airbag supplemental restraints also are standard. All seating positions in the Golf have a three-point safety belt and adjustable head restraints. A LATCH system aids child seat positioning and restraint in the back seat.

The GLS TDI comes standard with Engine Braking Assist to prevent compression-induced skidding in slippery conditions. Electronic Stabilization Program, which features brake assist, Anti-Slip Regulation, and Electronic Differential Lock, is optional on all 2006 Golf models.

Just one option package is offered as exclusively available on Golf GLS models. A 'Cold Weather Package' adds the ability to heat the front seats. Heated front windshield washer nozzles are included in the option package.
