1900 Mobile Stanhope

The Stanley twins, Francis E. and Freelan O., from Kingfield, Maine, were extraordinary Yankee inventors whose abilities were nearly complementary. Their first fortune was made by improving a photographic dry plate process. With money and time, they turned to steam cars as early as 1897. Never as elegant as the White steam cars, they were good enough, so the twins were able to sell the factory in 1899 for $250,000. The new owners changed the name to Locomobile, argued, and split up into Locomobile Co. and the Mobile Co. After making about 20 cars, they sold the factory back to the Stanleys in 1901 for $20,000.

This example was one of 200 produced when the Stanleys did not own the factory. It was found in a garage fire about ten years ago. The current owner restored the car in 2005.
