1951 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight

The top-of-the-line Oldsmobile model for 1951 was the Ninety-Eight Series, resting on a 122-inch wheelbase platform and measuring 208 inches in length. Body styles included a four-door sedan, 2-door Holiday Hardtop, and a convertible. The sedan was priced at $2,275 and accounted for the majority of 98 sales, with 78,122 sold. The Holiday Hardtop had 17,929 sales and the convertible, priced at $2,645 found 4,468 willing buyers. Power was from an overhead-valve V-8 engine with hydraulic lifters, a Rochester BB two-barrel carburetor, a 303 cubic-inch displacement, and developed 135 horsepower at 3600 RPM and 263 lb-feet of torque. The synchromesh three-speed column-shifted manual transmission was standard equipment while the Hydra-Matic was a $150 option.

The convertible and sedan came only with Deluxe equipment, while the Holiday Hardtop could be ordered with either Standard or Deluxe trim. Standard equipment included low-pressure tires, dual rear quarter courtesy lights, exposed chromed roof bows, cigarette lighter, bumper guards, dome light, rubber floor mats, stainless steel moldings, lined trunk, foam rubber seat cushions, additional chrome trim and moldings, and illuminated ashtray. The Deluxe trim added a Deluxe electric clock, Deluxe steering wheel with horn ring, special chrome trim, rear center seat armrests, and special rear door ornament. The upholstery choices were nylon cloth and leather, or nylon cord.

Production of the 98 Series would last from 1940 until 1996. 1951 was part of the Third Generation that was built from 1948 through 1953.
