1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Alfa Romeo's first new post-war design was introduced in 1950 and was called the 1900. It featured modern unitary construction and a compact twin overhead-cam four-cylinder engine. Sedan bodystyles were popular, with production reaching nearly 4,000. A coupe with a body by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan was sol as the 'Sprint.' Pinin Farina of Turin also provided a soft-top Spider.

The second new post-war design was the 1300cc Giulietta, first shown at the 1954 Turin Motor Show. When the 1900 had been introduced, it was a sedan; the Giulietta bowed as a Sprint coupe wearing a design by Franco Scaglione at Bertone. It had a small platform which allowed it to travel through narrow European streets with ease. A saloon (Berlina) version followed in the spring of 1955, and at the request of U.S. importer Max Hoffman, a convertible (spider) variant of the Giulietta was introduced that same year. Its design and construction was by Pinin Farina. The spider was based on the Sprint, and with an overall weight of 1,896 pounds, they were 121 pounds lighter than the coupe. The 1,290cc engine had dual overhead-cams, and a light alloy block and hemispherical cylinder head. Spider and Sprint models produced 80 horsepower. A Veloce engine with twin Weber DCOE carburetors was rated at 90 brake horsepower. Standard guise included a four-speed manual transmission, hydraulic drum brakes, and a worm-and-sector steering setup.

The Giulietta was a popular and important vehicle for Alfa Romeo, with demand quickly outpacing supply. Alfa Romeo was forced to rethink its production strategy and become, for the first time, a high volume manufacturer.

The original 750 series Giulietta later evolved to the 101 series, gaining two inches in its wheelbase, and offering better comfort for its occupants.
