Nissan motors introduced the Datsun 280Z for the United States market in the 1975 model year. The model was available from 1975 through 1978. It featured a 2.8-liter engine which was created by enlarging the bore of the L26 engine to create the L28. It was given a Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system and was rated at nearly 150 horsepower. The 1975 and 1976 models featured the Federally required 5 mph crash test bumpers that were introduced for the mid-1975 model year on the 260Z. In 1977, the 280Z was given 'mag' wheel covers, a five-speed manual gearbox, and collapsible spare tire. In the front was simulated hood vents which replaced the former fender access ports. Also in 1977, Datsun offered the 'Zap' edition and was a 'Special Decor Package.' These special edition vehicles were finished in Sunshine Yellow paint and sported black stripes down the center and sides, with yellow, red, and orange chevrons at the front ends of the stripes. It is estimated the 1,000 'Zap Z' cars were offered in 1977. The 'Zap Z' car appeared at the 1977 Long Beach Grand Prix as the official pace car. In 1978, another special edition appeared, and it came with Black Pearlescent paint and a 'Special Appearance Package' which featured dual racing mirrors, rear window louvers, and a unique red and silver stripe. It is believed that between 750 - 1,500 of these cars were produced.
