1938 Cadillac Series 60

Cadillac had begun using the '60' designation in 1936 and it shared many similarities to its LaSalle sibling, albeit with a slightly higher price. It offered the same quality offered from other Cadillac models, but in a smaller and shorter package and powered by a less powerful engine. The bodies were built by Fisher and for 1936, the catalog included three choices, including a coupe, convertible coupe, and touring sedan. Its engine was the same as the Fleetwood-bodied V-8 models, but with a smaller bore, and the smaller transmission unit was similar to the one used by LaSalle.

The convertible sedan body style joined the Series 60 in 1937, and styling changes were applied to the grille, hood, and fenders.

The 1938 Cadillac model lineup included the Fisher Series 38-60 resting on a 124-inch wheelbase, the 127-inch 38-60 Special on a 127-inch platform, and the 38-65 on a 132-inch wheelbase. The Series 60, 60 Special, and Series 75 came equipped with a 346 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine with 6.25:1 compression and delivering 135 horsepower. The Fleetwood Series 38-75 had a compression (6.7:1) version of the engine and produced slightly more power, rated at 140 hp. The Series 38-75 used a 141-inch wheelbase and prices ranged from the low-to-high $3,000s, with the seven-passenger town car topping the list with a price of $5,115.

The Series Sixty Special (38-60S) was offered solely as a four-door sedan priced at $2,085, and proved to be very popular with consumers, with 3,704 examples sold in 1938 - the most by any Cadillac model that year.

The top-of-the-line 1938 Cadillac was the Series 38-90 with a 141-inch wheelbase and sixteen-cylinder power. The massive 431 cubic-inch engine offered 185 horsepower and - like the other 1938 Cadillac models - used a three-speed selective synchromesh transmission with a single disc clutch and gearshift controls on the column. Stopping power was provided by hydraulic brakes at all four corners.

For 1938, Cadillac restyled its 60 Series line and offered four Fisher-built bodies, including a coupe, convertible coupe, convertible sedan, and sedan. The year 1938 proved to be the final year Cadillac offered rumble seats as well as side-mounted spare tires. In the front was a restyled grille with horizontal bars wrapping around the sides of the nose. The front-opening hood was done alligator style, three sets of four chrome bars adorned the side panel louvers, and the headlights were mounted to the sheet metal between the grille and fenders.

The Series 38-60 Coupe was the least expensive vehicle in the lineup with a list price of $1,695. Next was the sedan with a price of $1,775, followed by the convertible coupe listing for $1800, and the convertible sedan at $2,215. The 2,052 examples of the Series 38-60 accounted for approximately twenty-two percent of Cadillac's total 1938 production.

For 1939, the Series 60 was dropped and its entry-level position within the Cadillac lineup was taken over by the Series 61 (which also assumed the duties of the previous Series 65). The Series 60 Special remained, and the 346 cubic-inch, ninety-degree, L-head engine continued to provide 135 horsepower for the elegant and stately Fisher bodies of the Series 61, and the Fleetwood bodies of the Series 60S and Series 75.
