1977 Volkswagen Beetle

Over 21.5 million examples of the Volkswagen Beetle were produced from 1938 through 2003. It was continuously up-dated from the time post-war production began, under British military supervision, and in 1945 it received an improved running gear, larger engines, and subtly altered coachwork. In the post-war years, development proceeded slowly and although there were numerous detail improvements, the standard and 'export' salons (along with the Karmann-built cabriolet) remained largely unchanged from 1949 to 1965. The first major change to the original design came in 1953 when a larger, 1,192cc engine was introduced on the 1200 model. The Export models received hydraulic brakes and synchromesh gears, but even as late as 1962 the standard salon employed cable brakes and a non-synchromesh gearbox. For 1965, the window area became larger and revised, ball-jointed front suspension was adapted. A year later, the standard 34 horsepower 1200 model was joined by the 1300 equipped with a 50 horsepower engine.

In the mid-1970s, production of the Beetle shifted to other plants in Germany and was built in smaller numbers, until January 19th of 1978, when mainstream production shifted to Brazil and Mexico. By the time production finally ceased (in Mexico) in 2003 a staggering 21,500,000-plus Beetles of all types had been made.

The 1977 Beetle was available as either a 2-door sedan with seating for four, or a convertible sedan. Power was from a horizontally opposed four-cylinder overhead-valve engine displacing 96.7 cubic-inches and delivering nearly 50 horsepower. It had an electronic fuel injection system and solid valve lifters backed by a four-speed manual gearbox. The wheelbase measured 94.5 inches and had a length of 163.4 inches. Pricing began at around $3,000 with the convertible selling for about $600 more.
