1931 Oldsmobile Model F31

1931 Oldsmobile Model F31 1931 Oldsmobile Model F31 1931 Oldsmobile Model F31 This 1931 Oldsmobile has windows and not curtains. When the top is down the windshield lays down flat and it looks like a speedster. It has dual side-mounted tires which are both covered with side mirrors place on each. All the wheels are wire wheels which was optional equipment at the time of the original purchase. Wooden artillery style wheels were standard. This Roadster has two doors and seating for two or three in the front. There is a hide-away rumble seat which will accommodate two adults or three children. There is a small side door located behind the drivers door which is used as the golf club door. This will accommodate a set of golf clubs.

Under the hood is a six-cylinder engine capable of producing 65 horsepower.

The early 1930's was a difficult time for automobile manufacturers as the Great Depression meant that many individuals were unable to afford a vehicle. The Oldsmobile F-31 was a suitable option for many due to its relatively low sticker price and additional rumble seat which could carry luggage or additional passengers.

This 1931 Oldsmobile F-31 Series Sport Coupe was offered for sale at the 2007 RM Auctions held in Meadow Brook. The car is powered by a 197 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine capable of producing 65 horsepower. There is a three-speed selective sliding gearbox and duo-servo brakes. The wheelbase measures 112.5-inches and there are semi-elliptic leaf springs with a semi-floating rear axle.

Oldsmobile only sold one line of cars in 1931 and it was the F-31 Series. The six-cylinder engine featured a new intake valve porting and a Stromberg downdraft carburetor, manifold heat control, drop forged connecting rods, and cast grey iron pistons. The block was cast from close-grained chrome nickel alloy iron and the radiator was a Harrison cellular unit. The worm with three-tooth steering was adequate, and so were the duo-servo brakes. The DeLuxe package offered wooden or wire wheels, twin side-mounts, front and rear bumpers, and a trunk platform.

The Sport Coupe came with a rumble seat, a golf bag door, and a chromium-plated grille and shell. This example has been treated to a three-year restoration. It is finished in tan and brown with cream-colored wire wheels and whitewall tires. The interior is velour-like and is in good condition.

For 1931, Oldsmobile produced 47,279 vehicles making them eighth in the industry. 858 of those vehicles were Sport Coupes with wire wheels and 687 were Sport Coupes with wooden wheels.

At auction, the car was offered without reserve and estimated to sell for $20,000 - $30,000. The car was sold for just under the estimated value, fetching $18,700 after buyer's premium.

1931 Oldsmobile Model F31 1931 Oldsmobile Model F31 1931 Oldsmobile Model F31 The handsome 1931 Oldsmobile F-31 models sported a new tapered radiator shape that would be echoed on several 1932 GM car lines, including Chevrolet and even Cadillac. Also new to Oldsmobile for 1931 was synchromesh, which made it possible for the driver to shift gears without clashing them. A 197 cid L-head six-cylinder engine, rated at 62 horsepower, powered the F-31 models.

Oldsmobile's only convertible style for 1931 was the 2-door Convertible Roadster. It was a true convertible, in that it had roll-up side windows. The style was offered in standard and Deluxe models - both coming with a 'golf bag door' on the right-rear quarter. The Deluxe package added the dual side-mount spare tires and folding rear trunk rack seen on this example. The original list price for the Deluxe Convertible Roadster, with six wire wheels, was $1,000.

Riley Palmer was a youngster delivering newspapers on his bicycle when he first came across this rare F-31 Deluxe Convertible Roadster in 1963. It was stored in a building in his South Carolina hometown. He inquired about buying it then, but was turned down. Later, as an adult with a career in the auto industry, Rile would stop in during annual visits to check on the car, which continued to languish in storage. Whenever he asked if it could be bought, the answer was, 'No.' Finally, in 1996, after 33 years of persistence, the former owner accepted an offer and the Oldsmobile was Riley's at last! A three-year professional restoration was completed in 2007.

The six-cylinder Series F aided in keeping the Oldsmobile Company afloat during the tough economical times of the Great Depression. The Oldsmobile Company, at the time, was positioned above Pontiac and below Buick and LaSalle within the GM hierarchy.

This 1931 Oldsmobile Model F-31 Sedan has been driven 33,400 miles since new. It is a well-preserved, original example that has no body rust and still wears its original paint and pin-striping.

In 2008, this car was brought to the 2nd Annual Vintage Motor Cars of Hershey presented by RM Auctions where it was estimated to sell for $15,000-$20,000. It was offered without reserve. A high bid of $7,700 including buyer's premium was enough to secure new ownership. The lot was sold.
