1935 Dodge Model DU

The Dodge Model DU was termed as the company's 'New Value' line, introduced in 1935. The DU brought with it new styling and many new visual characteristics. The cars had a lower roofline, lower floor, narrower radiator grille, and parking lamps mounted on the front fender aprons. Hydraulic brakes, Autolite ignition, ventilated clutch, automatic choke, leaf spring front suspension, concealed radiator cap, easy steering, and a crank-open windshield were offered as Stoddard equipment.

The weight distribution was improved and the interior compartment expanded by having the engine moved eight-inches forward in the engine bay. Under the bonnet was a six-cylinder engine that displaced nearly 218 cubic inches and produced over 85 horsepower. The engine was mated to a three-speed selective sliding gearbox with a single plate dry disc clutch. A vacuum clutch and overdrive were offered as optional equipment.

The DU came in a variety of body styles, all resting on either a 116-inch or 128-inch wheelbase. The most popular option was the four-door sedan which saw production reach 74,203. Total production for the series was 158,999. The price of the vehicles were very competitive with other makes and models available; the price ranged from $645 for the Business Coupe to $995 for the long-wheelbase, four-door Caravan Sedan.
