1940 Buick Series 80 Limited

The combined 4,316 examples of the Buick Series 80 Limited accounted for approximately two-percent of Buick's total 1940 production. In efforts to increase Buick sales, Division President Harlow Curtice added two more series: the Series 50 Super built on the Series 40 Special's chassis and components, and the redesignated Series 70 Roadmaster that shared the Century's 126-inch wheelbase chassis. Due to the redirection of capital and resources, styling and engineering revisions across the Buick model range were minimal, limited outwardly by a slightly remodeled front end. The Series 40 Special gained a one-inch longer wheelbase, now measuring 121 inches, and the Limited Series 80 received the 133-inch wheelbase chassis previously used by the Roadmaster. The top-range Limited Series 90 used a 140-inch wheelbase platform and primarily eight-passenger body styles.

By 1940, the end of an era was occurring for four-door convertibles, and just seven examples of the convertible phaeton were built. The four-door fastback convertible phaeton sold better with 230 sales. Matching the exclusive convertible phaeton in regards to sales was the formal sport sedan, whose production figures were also seven. The sport sedan was also exclusive, with just 14 examples built. The most popular body style was the touring sedan with 3,810 examples built, followed by 248 of the formal sedan.

Priced above the Series 80 was the Series 90, consisting of a six-passenger touring sedan priced at $1,940, a touring sedan with seating for eight and priced at $2,100, and the limousine listing for $2,200.

The Century, Roadmaster, and Limited were powered by an overhead-valve inline-6 with a 320.2 cubic-inch displacement, mechanical valve lifters, five main bearings, and delivered 141 horsepower at 3,600 RPM. All 1940 Buicks were equipped with a three-speed sliding gear transmission with a single dry plate clutch and column controls. Hydraulic drum brakes at all four corners provided the stopping power.
