1910 Winton Model 17

In 1897, Alexander Winton became one of the first bicycle manufacturers to set up a factory for automobile construction in America. The company became famous and sales mushroomed in 1903 when a 2-cylinder, 20 horsepower Winton, called 'The Vermont,' was driven across the country from San Francisco to New York City, this at a time when few roads had been built. Winton's early engines had a unique way of controlling engine speed; they regulated the air-fuel mixture by controlling the opening and closing of the intake valves and adjusting the ignition timing. This was superseded by a conventional carburetor in 1908, along with Winton's first 6-cylinder engine, fitted in the Winton 'Six-teen-Six.' The 48-horsepower Model 17 was introduced in 1909 and continued until 1914.

Alexander Winton was an immigrant from Scotland who, upon arriving to America, opened the Winton Bicycle Company. He had also worked on a steamship as an engineer. The Winton Motor Carriage Company of Cleveland, Ohio is credited with being the first company in the United States to sell a motor car.
