2009 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, named for the Modenese designer who mastered the automotive aluminum form, is designed to be the world's finest 2+2 seat sport coupe. In the long-standing tradition of Gran Turismo Ferraris, the goal is accomplished through high tech, avant-garde design. Styling is by Pininfarina, which advances the sports coupe paradigm while paying homage to the famed Ferrari 375MM Coupe commissioned in 1954 for Ingrid Bergman by Roberto Rossellini.
Built entirely of aluminum, which provides extremely high structural rigidity while significantly reducing weight, the 612 Scaglietti is a new breed of 2+2 sports cars. Compared with the outgoing 456M, the new 612 Scaglietti weighs 132 pounds less, providing superior handling and road-holding capabilities. A car clearly in a league of its own, the 612 can carry four passengers in comfort and still achieve speeds and cornering forces most sports cars can only dream of.




Space and efficiency complementing high performance are hallmarks of the new Ferrari four seater, which attains the highest levels of thrust and balance without sacrificing comfort and luxury. The 612 Scaglietti is the pinnacle of practical Italian automotive style with light but rigid all-alloy construction, a superb 540 bhp V12 engine displacing just under six liters, the new F1 paddle shift transmission, the first application of integrated stability and traction control in a Ferrari, an adaptive suspension including continuously variable shock absorbers, and a host of luxury appointments expected by the discerning drivers who count themselves amongst the Ferraristi. Technical
The 612 Scaglietti's engine is a significant development of the prestige 12-cylinder that Ferrari uses in its sports berlinettas. Specifically tailored for the new 2+2, its structure is based on the 575M Maranello's and is the absolute pinnacle of Ferrari's technological achievement.



The 612 was the first Ferrari to use the CST electronic stability and traction control system has been used in a Ferrari. It aids the 612 Scaglietti's dynamic handling, designed Designed to afford the driver a great deal of freedom but still intervening in more difficult or challenging situations.

The CST offers exceptional performance and safety engineering in all kinds of driving conditions. The system integrates and completes the ABS and ASR functions, by also controlling the directional dynamics of the car.

Interior
The 612 Scaglietti boasts a wonderfully sophisticated sporty interior that reflects its all-aluminum structure and advanced technologies.

The dashboard offers the driver a cluster of analog and digital instruments. Alongside the large tachometer is the five inch multifunctional display with three modes: base, trip computer and tire pressure.

The main driving controls are all mounted on the steering wheel as well. The dynamic driving buttons are on the right (activate/deactivate Sport and CST) and the display buttons are on the left.

The cabin's functionality is highlighted by the use of great swathes of beautifully crafted leather, hand-stitched and discreetly comfortably padded. The same leather used for the seats is also used for the door pockets handles, and knee rests.

Design
The design of the 612 Scaglietti fully expresses the model's new values. Ferrari made a conceptual choice with Pininfarina to ensure that the four-seater would be a genuine departure from previous Grand Tourer models. It also made a technical decision that the bodywork would have to clothe a completely innovative structural layout. The 612 Scaglietti translates this approach into wonderfully aerodynamic lines. It is softly and elegantly aggressive, sculpted to express the powerful personality of a prestigious high performance, surprisingly roomy car.

Its strong lines run over full, solid surfaces, creating sensual forms that still have the tension of a true thoroughbred.

The long scallops on the 612 Scaglietti's flanks lend it character and aerodynamic elegance too. These are borrowed from another famous Ferrari, the 375MM ordered by Roberto Rossellini as a gift for his wife Ingrid Bergman.

The front wheel arches are very long with a shorter overhang while the rear ones are prominent and muscular to support the C-post. The traditional Ferrari air intake is given an original twist with the wheel arches protruding slightly further than the hood. The latter, thanks to a low, pulled-back engine, is set deep between the wheel arches which are the car's dominant volumes and give it an aerodynamic flourish accentuated by the crisp aluminum crease.

The rear section is large and solid-looking with the classic high tail lights. This design meets the aerodynamic demands of the slender profile that increases downforce.
