2009 Seat Toldeo

A new saloon concept

The new Toledo is already a reality. With it, SEAT redefines the classical saloon concept to offer more versatility, functionality, and unprecedented spaciousness for an automobile of this class.

The third Toledo generation retains the essence of its predecessors, combining the notchback concept of the model it supersedes (launched in 1998) with the rear hatch of the first Toledo (1991). Moreover; all without giving up one of the most appealing features for Toledo users: a large volume boot.

Due to its size, features and versatility, the second model of the 'new SEAT' is intended to be the first family car: an attractive large-volume saloon, perfectly combining length with interior space and a large capacity boot.

2009 Seat ToldeoÚndoubtedly, the new Toledo marks a change in the current trend among the cars of its type by redefining the classical saloon concept to respond to current requirements of potential customers in this class.

The second model of the 'new SEAT'

Toledo is, after Altea, the second model of the new generation of SEAT cars. Conceived by SEAT within the Audi brand group, this product portrays the image and features that identify the new models of the Spanish brand.

Thus, the new Toledo stands out with its innovative and attractive design. Particularly the shape of the rear door, the large front grille and the expressive headlights, and, on the sides, the dynamic line, a design feature beginning in the curve of the front wheel arch and running smoothly along the doors until reaching the back wheel.

With a length of 4.50 metres and a width of 1.77 metres, the new Toledo offers more interior space as compared to longer vehicles, thanks to its monovolume design and its height of 1.57 metres. Furthermore, it boasts a two-level luggage compartment with a 500-litre capacity.

Bluetooth and MP3 technologies

One of the outstanding innovations of the new SEAT Toledo is the Bluetooth technology, which allows a standardized wireless communication between two mobile devices. The main advantage of this technology is that it does not require a physical connection between the mobile telephone and the vehicle to provide a completely hands-free system.

2009 Seat Toldeo
Additionally, Bluetooth technology can be operated by means of multifunction buttons in the steering wheel to accept calls, disconnect after finishing and gain access to one of the most important features that the system exhibits: voice recognition. When using this feature, the user can verbally request the placement of a call to a number or a name, save names and numbers in the phone book, etc. And all this while keeping his or her hands on the wheel.

The new Toledo leaves the factory with an audio system - CD player, eight speakers and steering wheel mounted controls. With the Bluetooth option, the CD player can also read discs with MP3 tracks.

Four engines

The new model is available with four different engines, two petrol - 150 bhp (110 kW) 2.0 FSI and 102 bhp (75 kW) 1.6 - and two Diesel - 140 bhp (103 kW) 2.0 TDI and 105 bhp (77 kW) 1.9.

The two most powerful engines - the two-litre FSI and TDI - are combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. In addition, the former is also available with automatic and sequential Tiptronic 6-speed gearbox. The 2.0 TDI is available with the new DSG 6-speed gearbox.

2009 Seat ToldeoThe new Toledo also offers a high degree of safety. ABS, TCS and ESP systems are all included, along with an emergency braking assistant (EBA). In addition, assisted electromechanical steering and a chassis incorporating the well-known Agile Chassis combined with a multi-link rear axle, provide the model with excellent stability and very dynamic behaviour.

As for passive safety, the Toledo leaves the factory equipped with six airbags: driver, passenger, side airbags and curtain airbag. It is also equipped with three-point anchoring seatbelts on all seats, with pyrotechnic pretensioners for the front seats. The front and rear side seatbelts also feature load limiters.

The rear seats of the Toledo are equipped with the Isofix system for child seats.

Manufactured in Martorell

The new Toledo is exclusively produced in the SEAT factory at Martorell. Leading edge technology is implemented in manufacturing, such as laser welding for body assembly, which, completely galvanized, provides 12-year anticorrosion guarantee.

At the same time, production is characterized by the use of high-resistance steel and by thorough supervision of each unit, subject to strict in-line quality controls.

DESIGN
Brand image

The new Toledo's four-door plus rear hatch styling lends itself to comfort, space and versatility, whose design is a trademark of SEAT's new saloon.

It has the good looks of the new generation of SEAT products first seen on the Altea. Its shape is based on this model, and so it also inherits some of the distinctive lines of the Salsa concept. An outstanding design feature of the Salsa was the dynamic line running from the bonnet, over the front wheel and gradually descending to the rear wheel arch.

The front end features a broad chrome grille with a centrally mounted SEAT symbol, and dual headlamps behind polycarbonate cat's eye glass covers.

2009 Seat ToldeoThe bumper design is, likewise, eye-catching. The air intake grille under the front bumper is covered in honeycomb mesh. The foglamps are embedded at each end like diamonds.

The clean, sweeping line from bonnet to roof hides one of the most exclusive details on the Toledo - wiper blades camouflaged in the central pillars of the windscreen (pillar A).

The striking side view includes the dynamic line and the wheels, whose structure and design vary according to the chosen equipment level. All the rims in the range, both the steel and light alloy variations, are at least 16-inches in diameter. The alloy rims have two distinct designs - seven spokes on the Stylance finish and a sportier five spoke arrangement on the Sport and Sport-up versions. This wide offer is completed with 16-inch five-spoke rims available on the Stylance and Sport-up finishes.

The exterior is identified with a TDI or FSI badge beneath the side indicator repeaters. On the 140 bhp diesel version the 'T' is silver and the 'DI' combination is red, while on the FSI, the 'F' is silver and the 'SI' is in red.

Distinctive rear hatch

At the rear a carefully designed roof-hinged hatch provides a wide loading area for easy and comfortable boot access. Moreover, the careful design of the hatch has allowed fitting of a large rear window, which gives the driver excellent visibility through the rear-view mirror and lets in plenty of light.

The model is identified by the word 'TOLEDO' centred on the hatch under the traditional large 'S' brand symbol, which doubles as the boot latch.

The rear light clusters are designed like the iris of an eye, with the sidelights, brake lights and indicators arranged in concentric circles. The light clusters are located at the outer edge of the body, giving the model a compact, sporty look.

All the models feature a visible twin exhaust pipe, except the 102 bhp 1.6 which has a single pipe.

On either side of the rear bumper there are two sets of reflectors, as well as a foglamp on the left, and the reverse light on the right.

Value added boot

The two-tiered boot on the new SEAT Toledo has room beneath to store a normal size spare, a space-saver wheel, or the complete puncture repair kit.

At 1,034 mm long and with a 500 litre capacity, the boot is large enough for everyday needs.

The rear seats can easily be folded for added cargo space. There is no need to remove the headrests, as they fit underneath the front seat cushions. Simply pulling on a ribbon, the back of the seats push the seats forwards and downwards. The resulting area is flat and at the same level as the boot floor. With the parcel shelf in place, the boot capacity is 1,007 litres or 1,440 litres when the shelf is removed.

The lower level of the boot compartment is reached by sliding the floor lid back up against the rear backrest.

This space has a movable dividing panel and its capacity depends on the chosen puncture repair option (standard size, spacesaver wheel or repair kit).

With serviceability in mind, the boot is equipped with several accessories for holding objects: sturdy hooks on the floor to fasten a net, side nets beside the wheel covers and two further hooks to hang bags on.

Furthermore, the folding two-tier rear tray can hold the mandatory warning triangles.

Interior roominess

The new Toledo's passenger compartment is spacious and comfortable for both driver and passengers in the front and rear seats, and still has a fabulous boot capacity of 500 litres.

The dashboard has two distinct areas, prevails in the passenger compartment. One is closest to the windscreen; the other, closer to the driver and passenger. The latter has a technical engraving, and a sporty and visually attractive finishing. Both areas stand out with varied shades and textures, which create a pleasant, yet functional atmosphere.

The prominent feature of the dashboard is the large central console, which is slightly curved towards the driver. It houses the audio, navigation system and climate controls in a compact setting.

The sporty instrument panel features three, black-faced tubular dials. The centre dial houses the rev counter and is flanked by the speedometer and the third dial that contains the fuel level indicator, cooling liquid temperature, digital clock, odometer, and maintenance indicator.

The speedometer dial includes the ESP warning symbol, which remains lit when the system is disconnected. This function switch is located on the central tunnel.

The instrument panel lighting automatically adapts to current light conditions and can be adjusted manually.

Multifunction steering wheel

The three-spoke steering wheel is slightly off-centre and somewhat flattened at the bottom. It is both height and reach adjustable and can include multi-function controls on each side spoke for the audio equipment, navigator and the new Bluetooth telephone system.

There are four thumb-operated buttons on each side of the steering wheel. The ones on the left help make a musical selection from the CD loader, alternate between pre-selected radio stations, change from FM to AM or from FM to CD, mute the audio equipment, or repeat the last navigation indication.

When the Bluetooth system is incorporated, three of the four buttons on the left side will have alternate functions. One accepts a phone call, the second terminates a call and the third enables the driver to initiate a phone call using the voice recognition mode.

This last function is truly amazing. The system is able to connect the driver automatically with a spoken telephone number or with a name from the phone agenda.

The four buttons on the right help choose a radio station, alternate back and forth on a CD, fast forward or reverse a song and turn the volume up or down. The driver can also choose whether to have all eight buttons backlit.

Comfortable seats

The sculpted seats feature attractive upholstery, side support and a wide cushion that reaches the back of the knees.

The seat cushions are made with high quality, high-density foam that absorbs vibrations, increasing driving pleasure by reducing fatigue.

The sliding driver seat is reclining and height adjustable and gives lumbar support, making it fast and easy to adjust the perfect driving position.

Three passengers can ride in comfort on the rear seat, which becomes a two-seater when the wide central armrest is lowered.

The special design of the front seats allows rear seat passengers to stretch out their legs and place their feet beneath the front seat cushions. The front seats have quite ample room in the lower portion.

Storage solutions

There is room for everything in the new model. The driver and front passenger have the following solutions within easy reach - a glasses holder on the left, spacious glove compartment, two cup holders beneath the central console, a slide out shelf beneath the front seats, and front door-panel compartments where a 1.5 litre bottle fits.

The front armrest has a dual compartment. The top part is for small objects such as CD jewel cases, while the CD loader fits beneath. The passenger seat has a door-side compartment that can hold a refreshment can.

The ESP disconnection switch is located in front of the central tunnel, beside the lighter or 12-volt socket, and the door blocking mechanism. At the rear is another small storage compartment and 12-volt socket.

Rear sear passengers have a seat-side compartment, door-panel compartment (where a 1 litre bottle fits), pockets on the back of the front seats, storage space at the end of the central tunnel and extra storage and two cup holders when the central armrest is folded.

ENGINES
FSI technology, DSG clutch

The new Toledo is available with two petrol and two diesel engines, the 150 bhp (110 kW) 2.0 FSI, 102 bhp (75 kW) 1.6; 140 bhp (103 kW) 2.0 TDI and the 105 bhp (77 kW) 1.9 TDI.

Both the 1.6 and 105 bhp TDI are mated to a five-speed gearbox, while the more powerful FSI and 140 bhp TDI are available with a six-speed gearbox.

There is also a six-gear automatic tiptronic version on the FSI, as well as a six-speed DSG version on the 140 bhp TDI engine.

Petrol engines

150 bhp (110 kW) 2.0 FSI. This direct injection sequential engine delivers its 110 bhp output to the front shaft through a six-speed gearbox.

FSI technology gives the Toledo a combined fuel consumption rating of 8.2 litres for every 100 km, a competitive figure for an engine with this performance level. Its 150 bhp gives it a top speed of 206 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in merely 9.7 seconds.

The FSI engine features direct fuel injection into the cylinder, resulting in a better compression ratio (11.5:1) and enhanced engine performance.

There is less fuel wastage, since the direct injection prevents any fuel from collecting in the intake manifold on its way to the combustion chamber and all the injected petrol is turned into energy.

The combination of variable distributor and intake manifold that is adaptable in length (long in low gear and short in high gears) results in enhanced performance and greater engine torque across the entire rev range.

102 bhp (75 kW) 1.6. This four-cylinder in-line engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox and offers exceptional performance, delivering 102 bhp output at 5,600 rpm and highest engine torque of 148 Nm at 3,800 rpm.

Built entirely of aluminium, the engine block only weighs 21.3 kg. Thanks to its interior design, friction has been reduced on the piston rods. Together with its valve mechanism and new electronic management, these modifications give better fuel consumption and engine performance.

Diesel engines

140 bhp (103 kW) 2.0 TDI. This engine is a technological evolution of the well-known four-cylinder TDI. Thanks to the slight cylinder head capacity increase, a four-cylinder head and pump-injector units, it delivers its 140 bhp output at 4,000 rpm and maximum engine torque of 320 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm.

This engine fulfils the EÚ's phase 4 emissions regulations, and gives the Toledo a top speed of over 200 km/h and 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in merely 10 seconds.

These performance levels only consume 4.7 l/100 km on the extra-urban cycle.

Additionally, this engine can be enjoyed with manual gearbox, or DSG automatic, both possibilities available with six speeds.

DSG clutch

The DSG system is a combination of two, three-speed gearboxes and two multi-disc clutch mechanisms whose pinions alternate. For example, when the gear has shifted into second and nears its rev limit, the second clutch begins to engage the third gear. The transition between both gears is immediate - the first engages the clutch and the second declutches at the same time. Since the changeover is so fast, 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time (9.9 seconds) is faster than on the same engine mated to a manual gearbox (10.0 s).

DSG provides more economical fuel consumption than a standard automatic gearbox and a pleasant ride without losing torque or acceleration power thanks to the lack of a torque converter.

105 bhp (77 kW) 1.9 TDI. This engine is based on the well-known 100 bhp four-cylinder in-line 1.9 TDI with pump-injector units, variable geometry turbo and intercooler, which now delivers 5 bhp more thanks to its new electronic management.

Powered by this engine, the Toledo can achieve a maximum speed of 183 kph, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 12.4 seconds, with just 4.5 litres per 100 km.

CHASSIS
Road agility

The Toledo is also equipped with the DSR Agile Chassis concept. The system delivers rapid steering response and provides greater control, while it enhances safety.

Reducing command time between the steering wheel and the car's response guarantees absolute control. And that is more than a sensation: the Toledo turns surprisingly fast, with hardly any body roll, despite its relatively high chassis.

This is achieved by careful tuning of springs and dampers, specific tyres with a lower slip angle and variable assistance electro-mechanical steering.

New suspension

The Toledo comes equipped with McPherson front suspension featuring an aluminium subframe and an independent multi-link rear suspension, which helps deliver a high level of dynamic performance and driving comfort.

The front McPherson suspension springs are perfectly angled and include rigid silent-blocks which provide stability in any situation, from sudden load shifts to braking in corners. These silent-blocks also reduce loads on the driveshaft while accelerating, braking and cornering.

The multi-link rear suspension features four links (three transverse and one longitudinal) that control wheel direction and provide exceptional dynamic qualities and driving comfort. With near-perfect wheel alignment, both understeer and slip angles are reduced.

A virtual prototype was used in the development of the chassis, which allowed dynamic simulation of the entire car. Several adjustments were tested before being accepted. These theoretic calculations were then applied to a real car, and subjective measurements were made by expert test drivers prior to approving the final suspension adjustments.

Electro-mechanical steering

The electro-mechanical steering system provides assistance, and therefore draws energy, only when the steering wheel is either being turned or is returning to its original position and so reduces fuel consumption.

The system also provides automatic steering correction at the straight ahead position when encountering a strong side wind. By using a corrected '0' position as a central point, the driver is relieved of continuous exertion on the wheel to maintain a straight course.

It is integrated in the front aluminium subframe, and its location reduces the vibrations that are usually transmitted to the driver's hands.

SAFETY
Both inside and out

The new Toledo for sale in the EÚ will be factory equipped with six airbags as standard in all its versions. The model also features a body structure designed to withstand even the most serious collisions, with carefully studied deformation zones that direct and progressively absorb energy from an impact.

Another element that warrants special attention is the active footrest. Designed to resist impact without distortion it significantly reduces the risk of ankle injury. The collapsible brake pedal and movement-limited clutch move clear of the feet in the event of a head-on collision.

The accelerator pedal is hinged at the floor, reducing injury to the shins. To further enhance driver safety the collapsible steering column cannot intrude into the cockpit.

The front three point anchoring seatbelts, are equipped with a pyrotechnic pretensioner and tension limiter. It has a torque bar on the belt shaft that deforms to limit the belt's tension. The rear seatbelts, also with three point anchorings, feature load limiters in the side seats.

The low-speed impact protection system has deformation modules designed to absorb the maximum energy the longitudinal body rails can withstand. It offers protection to important parts of the car such as the engine's cooling system. It also simplifies the replacement of damaged parts, which are simply bolted onto the main chassis.

Six airbags as standard

All the units of the new Toledo destined for the EÚ market are factory equipped with a total of six airbags: driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags.

The passenger airbag can be disconnected by inserting the ignition key in a lock in the glove compartment, and a warning light comes on in front of the passenger. This airbag must remain disconnected when a baby is the passenger in a baby seat. With the ignition key, the lock can be turned to the 'off' position, lighting up a display located in front of the passenger seat to warn about the situation. When the passenger airbag is disconnected, all the others remain operative.

To improve reaction time in the event of a side collision, pressure sensors have been installed in the door interiors. They complement the acceleration sensors, which are located in the central tunnel (the safest part of the car), and reduce the safety system's reaction time by 30%. Once the sensors detect and confirm a side collision, it only takes 7 milliseconds to activate the airbag system. The side airbags are completely inflated only 20 milliseconds later.

In the event of a collision, the terminal box automatically connects the hazard lights, courtesy lights, unlocks the doors, disconnects the fuel pump and turns off the engine.

Pedestrian protection system

The Toledo provides passenger and pedestrian protection alike. The front end has been developed and designed to minimise pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, especially the easily deformed, non-aggressive areas which absorb a great deal of energy.

An energy absorbing 'soft' surface on the bonnet and at the lower part of the front end helps to minimise injury to knees and shins. These safety measures receive a high rating on the scale of future regulations regarding pedestrian safety.

The hidden windscreen wiper blade design reduces possible head injuries. The traditional location of the wipers in the lower part of the windscreen is where pedestrians usually hit their heads in an accident.

Robust body

The car's parts have been designed and the materials chosen to create a practically crush-proof safety cell at the core of the passenger compartment.

The safety cell body structure has been developed to direct crash forces in a calculated way. In the event of a collision, the deformation zones absorb the maximum amount of energy of an impact and so provide the best possible passenger safety.

Three rigid protection rings form protective arches in the event of a roll over. The first ring starts at the windscreen and continues downward through the A-pillars and forward of the door frame. The second joins the central B-pillars via both roof and floor plan (which forms a lying H on either side), while the third ring encompasses the C-pillars, the frame of the hatch and the rear cross member. This robust ring has become a main feature in all new SEAT designs.

Also structurally important are the diagonal reinforcement bars within the doors in addition to the horizontal bars at the waistline of the body through highly resistant cross members. Besides these protective bars, doors are filled with dense foam which helps absorb side impacts, improves soundproofing and reduces vibration.

Driving adapted brakes

The new Toledo features a dual servo braking system that responds according to braking needs. Normal pressure exerted on the pedal produces a gradual braking effect, while more energetic pressure yields a keener braking response.

TCS traction control is standard across the entire range and works in conjunction with the engine management to prevent the wheels from skidding or spinning.

The Toledo also features the latest generation ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), which detects braking effectiveness on each wheel and adjusts brake force accordingly. If the ABS is activated on the front wheels, ESP delivers increased braking power to the rear wheels to take full advantage of total braking capacity.

ESP also includes EBA (Emergency Brake Assistance), increasing braking pressure to take full advantage of the system's capacity in an emergency situation. EBA is activated when the brake pedal is repeatedly pumped in quick succession.

ESP features a new active safety function that limits stability control by simply applying brake pressure. It automatically and selectively modulates the braking system and keeps the car on course by making precise adjustments to the direction by acting on each of the wheels to correct oversteering or understeering reactions.

The ESP disconnection switch is located on the central tunnel. When deactivated, a warning light appears on the instrument panel. TCS can also be disconnected.

EQÚIPMENT
Bluetooth and MP3 technologies

Úntil recently, exchanging information among mobile devices was only possible through a cable connection or infrared. These non-standard connections were complicated and greatly limited mobility.

On the other hand, Bluetooth technology provides a standard connection among several mobile devices.

The main advantage of this new technology is that a physical connection between the mobile telephone and the car is not needed for a complete hands-free system. This technology has been implemented as a worldwide standard so that devices of different brands can exchange information without incompatibilities.

With the system introduced by SEAT, all the names and numbers stored on the telephone's SIM card are available to the user on the display panel, which also lists incoming and outgoing calls, agenda, etc.

Previously mentioned under the multifunction steering wheel heading, the Bluetooth system can be accessed through three of the four buttons on the left of the steering wheel. One button accepts a phone call, another hangs up, and a third initiates voice recognition mode, one of this technology's most important functions. Voice recognition enables the user to begin a phone call from a number or a name in the agenda, record names in the agenda, etc., and the driver's hands remain on the steering wheel at all times.

When incorporating the new Bluetooth technology, the CD player in the sound system can also read discs with MP3 tracks.

Radio and navigation

The audio system on the Toledo is easy to use and perfectly integrated in the central console.

A large screen is at the centre of the audio equipment and features a slot at the top for a conventional CD or one recorded in MP3 format. There are six mode-variable buttons at the bottom whose functions are displayed on the screen - radio, CD, CD-loader, etc.

The eight-speaker audio system, can also be controlled using the eight buttons located on the steering wheel, four on each side.

The thumb-controlled buttons operate the telephone, six-volume memory adjustment, 24 pre-selected channels, CD-loader, programme selector (up to 24), automatic alternation between frequencies, speed-adjusted volume and automatic connection with traffic news broadcasts.

The dynamic navigation system features a 6.5 inch colour screen (16:9 format) and navigation functions through on-screen maps and/or screen icons and voice messages. The navigator is even able to automatically recalculate a driving route according to the traffic information received from the TMC Traffic Message Channel.

The navigator features a Bluetooth radio/CD sound system.

Multi-purpose removable storage module

This practical new optional element located in the centre of the back seat, gives passengers in the rear additional storage capacity, including two cup holders, elastic straps to hold magazines or documents and two removable table tops, which can hold your documents while you write.

While the car is in motion, it is advisable to remove the table tops and cans, and keep the lid closed.

When not in use, the storage module can be fastened securely in the boot.

The range in detail

Reference, Sport, Stylance and Sport-up are the trim levels that offer an extensive range in combination with the four engines available.

Entry level Reference features a comprehensive equipment level, including ABS, TCS, twin front airbag, side airbags, curtain airbag, air conditioning, 16-inch wheels with low-profile tyres, front power one-touch anti-trap windows, electric door mirrors with electric park position, remote controlled central locking with folding key, CD radio with eight speakers, and two-tiered boot, among others.

The Sport finish adds on Reference with stiffer sports suspension, sport seats, specific interior trim, 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and leather steering wheel and gear knob.

Stylance trim goes up a notch with luxurious elements such as dual-zone climate control, seven-spoke light alloy rims, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with emergency braking assistant (EBA), leather steering wheel, on-board computer, cruise control, volumetric alarm with safety battery, and 'Coming Home' function, among others.

Finally, the Sport-up finish is the sportiest and most complete Toledo trim level. Building on Stylance, it includes the sporty elements of the Sport versions.
