1988 Mazda RX-7

The big news for 1988 was the addition of a convertible to the RX-7 lineup, joining the coupe 2-seater and 2+2 hatchback coupe. Available options included the SE, GTU, GXL, and Turbo. Pricing began at $15,480 for the SE Coupe and rose to over $20,000. The base engine was a Wankel with two coaxial three-lobe rotors. It displaced 80 cubic inches and offered 145 horsepower. With the help of the turbocharger, horsepower rose to 182 BHP. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard equipment.

The convertible had three folding positions: open, closed, or Targa-style. The convertible also came with a Windblocker device that prevented air from entering the passenger area from the rear. It consisted of a hinged panel, which also helped reduce wind noise and air turbulence. To help keep the passengers warm when the top was down, it came with a high-output heater.

All models came standard with a theft-deterrent system.

GXL models rode on 15-inch wheels and tires versus the 14-inch which came on the base models. They also had Auto Adjusting Suspension, which had a choice of Normal or Sport ride.

This project continued until 1973, when the oil crisis finally put an end to the car. Around 1975 Sinpei Hanaoka,....

Inside an elongated chamber, a rotor with three curved sides revolves around a central driveshaft. Air and fuel enter from the sides and are compressed as the rotor spins. The result is the equivalent of a conventional combustion chamber. During....
