1968 Volkswagen Beetle

The 1968 Volkswagen Beetle 1500 came as a 2-door sedan (including a sunroof sedan) and a convertible sedan. Pricing ranged from $1,700 - $2,100. Power came from a horizontally opposed, overhead-valve four-cylinder engine displacing 91.1 cubic-inches and offering 53 horsepower. It power was driven to the rear-wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Hydraulic drum brakes could be found at all four corners.

Changes and modifications to the 1968 Beetle included a one-piece bumper without overriders. In the back was a larger tail lamps with integrated backup lights, an external gas filler with spring-loaded door, and revised door handles with trigger release. In the back, the deck lid was slightly bulged. The hood release moved to the outside. Inside, the car was given a collapsible steering column as standard equipment. An Automatic Stick Shift became optional. That semi-automatic unit could be shifted from low to driving range without the use of the clutch. Instead, the driver just needed to move the gearshift level.

'Sarcophagus' seat backs were also a new feature, complete with integrated head restraints.
