The Chrysler 300B was stylish, luxurious, and powerful and built in limited numbers, with just 1,102 built in 1956. The company claimed that it was 'America's Most Powerful Car' and proved its point at Daytona Beach, where the model set a world passenger car speed record of 139.9 mph. The most significant improvement to the 300B for 1956 was the increase in the Hemi V8's displacement, resulting in a boost of 40 horsepower. Other changes included 12-volt electricals and improved brakes. Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look' design theme, introduced on the C-300 of 1955, continued to use the 'egg-crate' grille elements borrowed from the Imperial, plus a slightly revised taillamp treatment. The interior had rich leather upholstery and pushbutton dash controls for the two-speed PowerFlite automatic transmission.

The Chrysler Letter Series cars were known as the 'banker's hot rod' and its C-300 forebearer was purpose-built by Chrysler to dominate AAA and NASCAR stock-car racing. Spearheaded by businessman Karl Kiekhaefer of Mercury Marine, Chrysler 300s were race-prepared at the Mercury Research Lab, where his racing headquarters were located. Tim Flock, a former Hudson star driver, was tasked with driving duties, and the Kiekhaefer team's first race came in 1955 at Daytona, resulting in victory. The team entered 40 of 45 races for 1955, winning 22 – 18 with Flock, who won his second national title. In 1956, Kiekhaefer's team campaigned the 300B and soon added more cars and top-name drivers. In 1956, the Mercury Marine team took 21 of the first 25 races, including 16 consecutive victories from March 25 to May 30, going on to 30 wins out of 50 races entered.
