1979 Lotus Esprit S2

Lotus introduced the Esprit at the 1975 Paris Auto Show and during its production lifespan, it would enjoy an evolving evolution with its shape being influenced over the years by three well-regarded designers, Giugiaro, Peter Stevens, and Julian Thomson. Initially, it was going to be called 'Kiwi', but instead followed with Lotus tradition with the 'E' and 'Esprit.' It also continued the company's tradition of lightweight construction, fine handling, and exceptional performance. The Lotus '907' 2-liter 4-cylinder engine was responsible for propelling the 1000kg car, and when various increases in power were introduced (including the 2.2-liter turbocharged Limited Edition), the chassis was more than capable of handling the additional power.

In 1978, Lotus commemorated the success of the Lotus 79 and the World Championship for Mario Andretti by finishing some S2 Esprits in the distinctive Black and Gold of John Player Specials. Around 100 examples of the JPS were made for the UK market, all numbered and given Colin Chapman's signature on the dashboard.

Two examples of the limited edition S2 Esprit were put on display in October 1978, at the British Motor Show. Both were finished in the black and gold colors of their F1 sponsor JPS. When the cars were ready for sale, JPS was no longer a sponsor of the team so they could not be called JPS Esprits. Although they are commonly known as the 'JPS', their correct name is the 'World Championship Commemorative Model'.

Three groups of these limited editions S2 Esprit cars were built, one for the 'Domestic' UK market, another for the 'USA', and the third for the 'Rest of the World.'

'JPS' Esprits had gold wheels and 'World Champion' stickers, and gold window trim. The 'Commemorative Edition' number can be found on the rear upper quarter panel. The interior is finished in black leather with gold corduroy inserts on the seats, door panels, and center armrest. There is a 3-spoke Momo wheel with Mario's name on it.
