Designer: Marcello Gandini
As the 1980s concluded Lamborghini took a stab - and it wasn't its first - at a less expensive model. Designed by Marcello Gandini, the P140 featured a new chassis and a 325 hp mechanical-injection V10 in unit with 5-speed transmission and differential. Overheating and other shortcomings forced the company to cancel the project, as did the development and launch of the Countach's successor, the 202-mph Diablo. The P140 thus remained a one-off, and the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance marked the first time it was ever seen in public.
The Lamborghini P140 was a single-built prototype designed by Marcello Gandini, an employee of Bertone and a designer of the Lamborghini Uracco, Bravo, and many other Lamborghini models. Lamborghini was looking for a design that would replace the aging Urraco (meaning little bull) and Jalpa models. The goal was to produce a car that had competitive pricing and could be produced in higher quantities. The result was a design that resembled the Diablo, a design that Gandini had helped create. The engine used in this smaller version of the Diablo was a ten-cylinder power-plant in 'vee' configuration and produced 400 horsepower. The engine had been created in a mere ten months. A six-speed gearbox, independent suspension, carbon fiber body, and aluminum monocoque chassis composed the contents for this 2800 pound super car. Top speed was achieved at 186 mph and zero to sixty took only five seconds.

The P140 was later rebodied by Ital Design, dubbed 'Cala', and debuted to the public in 1995.
