1963 Ferrari 250 GTE

The Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 was the Prancing Horse's first four-seater (2+2) large-scale production model and shared its wheelbase with its more sporting sibling, the 250 GT LWB Tour de France. Power was sourced from a Colombo V12 unit with a 2,953cc displacement and delivering 240 horsepower. Engineers placed the car's engine forward and widened the track of all four wheels, resulting in increased interior space and more comfort. Pininfarina used steel to craft the bodies and aluminum for the boot lid, doors, and bonnet.

The production version of the 250 GTE was introduced in 1960 after a prototype 250 GTE had debuted at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the hands of the course marshal. By the time production had ended in 1963, nine hundred fifty-seven 250 GTEs had been constructed. This was a rather significant figure, especially considering that many Ferrari purists ignored the model as it had four seats and virtually lacked a racing pedigree. Those who did acquire the 250 GTE received a reliable and potent touring vehicle that was capable of chauffeuring four passengers and their luggage long distances in high style. The rear seats were best suited for children or small adults.

The 250 GT/E was built through three series with changes being mainly continued to the exterior lighting arrangments and dashboard layout. Series 1 vehicles rested on Borrani RW3591 wheels while Series 2 and 3 models received Borrani RW3690 wheels. In addition to some cosmetic changes, Series III cars benefitted from the addition of coils to their leaf-spring rear suspension.

Priced at approximately $11,500, the 250 GT/E resulted in additional financial stability for Ferrari during the early 1960s and gave the company a foothold into sectors of the market already contested by rivals Maserati and Aston Martin. It was a direct descendent of the most commercially successful Ferrari of its day, the 250 GT. Introduced in 1954, it used a more compact and lighter Colombo-designed 3.0-liter V12 in place of its Europa predecessor's Lampredi unit. The chassis was a traditional Ferrari platform comprised of a multi-tubular frame tied together by oval main tubes, though the independent front suspension now employed coil springs instead of the transverse leaf type. A four-speed, all-synchromesh gearbox transmitted power to the live rear axle, while hydraulic drums provided the stopping power. In 1959, disc brakes arrived and a four-speed-plus-overdrive gearbox the following year. The 250 GT/E received both of these modern features from the start of production in 1960.

The styling retained its predecessor's attractive design cues and sporting demeanor. The Tipo 128E outside-plug engine's 240bhp ensured that there was no reduction in performance despite the weight gains that resulted from the additional seating and accouterments.
