1980 Ford Mustang

The 1980 Ford Mustang was the second year of its redesign and little improvements or changes were made from its inaugural year. Bodystyles included the Notchback and the Sport Hatchback. The Notchback proved to be more popular with 128,893 examples sold while the Sport Hatch had 98,497 sold. The Mustang Ghia Notchback added 23,647 sales and 20,285 for the Mustang Ghia Hatchback. The base engine was an inline four-cylinder unit with overhead cams and a 140 cubic-inch displacement size. The engine offered 88 horsepower while the turbocharged version brought horsepower to 150 hp. The optional six-cylinder engine displaced 200 CID and the 255 CID V8 had 120 horsepower. Optional engines came with front disc brake pads.

The Mustang was offered with two suspension setups - the standard and the 'Special Suspension System' that included Michelin TRX tires on forged aluminum wheels.

The Ghia Mustang had low-back bucket seats with European-styled headrests. They had 14-inch tires, turbine wheel covers, Ghia insignia on the decklid, color-keyed window frames, dual remote mirrors, pin striping, and roof assist handle.

The Cobra option, which added nearly $1,500 to the base price, had a slat-style three-hole grille, hood scoop, front air dam, and rear spoiler. Mechanical improvements included the TRX suspension system. They had black bumper rub stripes, larger TRX tires riding on forged metric aluminum wheels, the turbocharged engine, sport-tuned exhaust, bright tailpipe extensions, dual black sport mirrors, Tu-Tone treatment, and bodyside and quarter window taping. The quarter windows featured 'Cobra' lettering.

New options introduced for 1980 included a Carriage Roof option, a roof luggage rack, cargo area cover on the hatchback, Recaro adjustable seatback bucket seats, and liftback window louvers.
