1987 Pontiac Firebird

There were minor changes for the 1987 F-body Firebird; perhaps the most significant being the loss of the SE coupe. In its place, a new Formula option became available. Inside, the base Firebird was given a new seat with an adjustable headrest and Ripple cloth upholstery. Other standard equipment included a full-length console with instrument panel, side window defoggers, a front air dam, GM Computer Command Control system, a hatchback 'pull-down' feature, U63 Delco AM radio, cloth reclining front seat, concealed quartz halogen headlights, a lockable storage compartment, and 'wet-arm' windshield wipers. New options included molded door panel trim except on the GTA model, Y99 performance suspension, and new body-color side moldings. The base engine was an overhead valve six-cylinder unit displacing 2.8 liters and offering 135 horsepower. A 5-liter V8 was available with 155 horsepower. A 5.7-liter multi-port fuel-injected V8 engine was available in all cars with the Formula Package and standard in the GTA.

The Trans Am model came with a four-way manual adjustable seat, aero body skirting package, air extractors, hood air louvers, soft ray tinted glass, fog lamps, and a rally-tuned suspension. The GTA option added articulating front bucket seats, a limited-slip rear axle, a special aero package, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, diamond-spoke gold-colored wheels, and a performance suspension. Rear disc brakes were also standard.

The Formula models added a body-color aero rear decklid spoiler, a domed hood, analog instrumentation, Hi-Tech aluminum wheels, and a special performance suspension.

For 1987, Pontiac produced 80,439 Firebird coupes.
