The 1973 Mercedes-Benz 220 Series was a 4-door sedan available with an overhead-cam four-cylinder engine in either petrol or diesel versions. The 134 CID unit produced 85 horsepower with petrol and 57 horsepower with diesel. Mercedes-Benz switched from SAE gross to SAE net horsepower for 1973, resulting in a decline in advertised horsepower/torque ratings. The diesel engine came with a standard four-speed manual gearbox but could be had with an optional automatic. The petrol version came with an automatic as standard equipment. Pricing began at $6,890 for the petrol and $6,660 for the diesel version. This was an increase of around $600 from the 1972 version. This 'junior' level Mercedes had been introduced in 1968 alongside the 200 series line. It rode on a 108.3 inch wheelbase and was designated W/114/115. They had thinner C-pillars than the senior models, large amber parking lights below each headlamp, a lower hood, deeper beltline, and a flatter rear deck.
