2002 Hyundai Equus HCD-7 Concept

At the 2003 Sydney Motor Show, Hyundai is showing its HCD-7 large luxury limousine concept car, a 4.5 litre alloy V8-powered pointer to a future version of its Equus prestige saloon as sold in Korea and some other markets.

Penned by Hyundai's California design studio, HCD-7's curvaceous exterior is aircraft fuselage-inspired with the theme extending to its executive jet-style interior.

Vertically stacked head and tail lights and prominently sculptured wheel housings framing massive, 21'x 10' billet alloy wheels lend an assertive presence to the elegantly expansive Hyundai.

2002 Hyundai Equus HCD-7 ConceptThe sleek, aerodynamically sculptured exterior of the HCD-7 was inspired by an aircraft fuselage and features wraparound windscreen glass that hides the A-pillars and pulls the 'energy-tension' around the sides and to the rear of the fuselage. The clamshell roof design provides a sleek aerodynamic package with very low wind noise in the cabin.

The HCD-7's bold front grille is the focal point of the front end and evokes other high-end series Hyundai cars.

Headlights and taillights are vertically stacked with jewelled lens wrapping up over the curvature of the fenders. The fenders' hard cut character lines front and rear give HCD-7 a strong, aggressive stance, while the pearlescent gold-finished body envelope hugs the huge, armour-like billet alloy 21' x 10' wheels and Michelin 245/45 R21 performance tyres.

HCD-7's interior carries the concept of a luxurious executive jet aircraft. Occupants are treated to comfort and elegance. The dashboard is ergonomically arched toward the driver and front passenger and the instrument panel and controls are simple and elegant.

Adding to a cleaner look by replacing the centre console is a state-of-the-art 7' flat screen colour monitor that pops out of the dash and contains climate control, navigation and audio controls. Two sets of input devices for the monitor are provided for the front occupants. The driver's are paddles on the steering wheel while the front passenger's are set below the monitor itself.

The door inner panels are concave-curved as in an aircraft cabin to create a cocoon effect for occupants, who are cosseted by the opulent, fully adjustable seating trimmed in the finest selected leathers.

The overall look of the Hyundai HCD-7 Equus exudes an imposing elegance with a hint of sportiness in the large, luxury car genre.

Launched at the 2002 Chicago Auto Show, the HCD7 is the product of the California-based Hyundai Design Centre, which also produced the HCD6 open-topped roadster concept in 2001. The HCD7 is a study based on a super-executive sized car, a category above the current luxury XG30. The HCD7 is a front-wheel drive saloon with an all-aluminium DOHC 4.5-litre V8 engine, electronic traction control and automatic ride-height control.

The aerodynamic exterior of the HCD7 was inspired by an aircraft fuselage. Innovative features include a jewel-like headlight assembly featuring upright projector beam lamps vertically stacked. The tail lights are also vertically stacked and fitted into the bold rear bumpers.

To provide a feeling of even more space, there is no centre stack containing the navigation and sound system controls. Instead, there is a state-of-the-art seven-inch LCD flat screen colour monitor that pops out of the dashboard when the owner inserts the ignition card into a slot on the right side of the steering wheel.
