1967 Chevrolet Malibu Series

The Malibu was first introduced in 1964 and was positioned in the premium sedan market intended for families. It was a car that quietly, but emphatically stated first class. As the musclecar wars continued to rage, however, Chevrolet could not turn a blind eye. Soon, the Malibu SS was born.

The 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle merged performance, style and value that few - if any - competitors could match in its segment. The second-generation Chevelle was completely restyled in 1966. It was given a more shapely and athletic interpretation of the original concept. The straight lines of the first generation were replaced with the 'Coke bottle' shape then in vogue and arguably most successfully interpreted at GM under Bill Mitchell's design leadership. Customers were now able to personalize it to suit the individual desires and needs. The Chevelle SS assumed the role in the musclecar lineup, while the Malibu continued to be a sporty premium model. The Malibu, described as a nicely appointed Chevelle, found its distinction and uniqueness through the use of bright lower bodyside and rear moldings.

After the major restyling in 1966, Chevrolet made only minor changes to its Chevelle and Malibu models for 1967. The changes they did make, however, were significant nonetheless. A new grille, new tail lights and longer front fenders gave the 1967 model a leaner, longer appearance that was perfectly in keeping with the considerable performance available across the lineup. Buyers were given over 80 available options to personalize their vehicle. In addition to six engines ranging from a pedestrian 250 CI inline-6 to the L79 396/375 HP big block, there were no fewer than six transmissions and nine rear-end ratios. Options included Superlift air shock absorbers, Strato-ease headrests, and special instrumentation.

There were more than 166,000 Chevelles constructed in 1967, with just 4,048 or so built with the powerful L79 small-block engine. The Turbo-Fire engine was rated at 325 HP that year, but it remained identical internally to the Corvette version. It features the same Winters aluminum intake, 4-barrel carburetor, open-element air cleaner and high-lift hydraulic cam, the only difference from the Corvette being the exhaust manifolds. Only manual transmissions were offered with an L79 purchase.

The 1967 Chevy Malibu was a nicely appointed Chevelle that was distinguished from its siblings by the use of bright moldings and Malibu nameplates. Full wheel covers also helped set them apart. The interiors were more luxurious with a unique steering wheel, an electric clock, bright accents throughout, color-keyed floor carpeting, a foam-cushioned rear seat, an illuminated heater control panel, and a walnut-finish upper panel on the instrument panel. Body styles included a 4-door sedan, 4-door Sport Sedan, 2-door sport coupe, station wagon, and convertible.
