Plymouth downsized its full-size Belvedere in 1962, with more compact outside dimensions that found favor with some, however, most American car buyers at the time believed 'bigger is better.' In motorsports, drag racing in particular, the compact dimensions were favorable.

Within the Plymouth lineup, the Belvedere was sandwiched between the Savory/Fleet Special and the Fury. It shared its 116-inch wheelbase and 202-inch length with the other full-size models and came standard with an inline-6 with overhead valves, an aluminum block, a 225 cubic-inch displacement, and 145 horsepower. This was also the base engine in the Fleet, Savoy, and Fury. The base V8 had overhead valves, a cast-iron block, five main bearings, solid valve lifters, a two-barrel Carter carburetor, and 230 horsepower. Standard mechanical equipment on the Belvedere included unibody construction, a new aluminum transmission, electrical circuits, and higher torque starters. The three-speed TorqueFlite, available only with V8s, used push-button controls and had a lower transmission tunnel hump which offered better interior room and lighter overall weight. Body styles included a two- and four-door sedan, a two-door hardtop sedan, and a station wagon.

The total 1962 Plymouth Belvedere sales reached nearly 53,500 units, a slight decrease from the 54,421 of 1961 (nearly 68,000 including the Custom Suburban sales).

The 1963 Plymouth Belvedere continued to use the unibody platform but its styling was updated making it look longer and wider. Design cues included wide, colored moldings traversing the bodyside, a short molding on the rear roof pillar, and a Belvedere name-script positioned at mid-fender behind the front wheel cutout. Body styles remained the same as 1962, but the station wagon was available with 6- or 9-passenger seating. The six-cylinder engine was available on the sedans and hardtop coupe, while the wagons came only with a V8. The two-door sedan was priced at $2,340, the hardtop coupe at $2,430, and the four-door sedan at $2,400. The 6-passenger wagon had a factory base price of $2,815 while the 9-passenger version added an extra $100. The inline-6 produced 145 horsepower and the V8 had 230 horsepower. A three-speed manual was standard, a four-speed manual floor shift unit was available in mid-season, and an automatic was optional.

Optional V8 engines included the 'Commando' 361 CID V8 with a two-barrel carburetor and 265 horsepower, the 'Golden Commando' 383 with a four-barrel carb and 330 horsepower, and the 'Super Stock' 246 CID V8 with a four-barrel carb and 415 horsepower. The top engine was the 'Super Stock' with a dual four-barrel carburetor and 425 horsepower. This engine was very potent in the 'lightweight' Belvedere.

The sedan was the most popular, accounting for 54,929 sales, followed by the six-passenger station wagon with 10,297 sales. The hardtop coupe had 9,204 sales, and 6,218 of the two-door sedan.
