The Mercedes-Benz 230 SLK Kompressor was based on the R170 platform and introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1996. Power was from a four-cylinder engine which displaced 2.3-liters and was enhanced with a supercharger, bringing horsepower to nearly 200 BHP. Along with its potent powerplant, it had a folding steel hardtop roof which was hydraulically operated. When lowered, it still offered 145 liters of luggage space.
