The 1977 Porsche 911 Series consisted of one series, the 911S, which was offered as a coupe or a Targa. The Turbocharged Carrera was available only as a coupe. The Targa was unveiled in September 1965 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. It featured a stainless steel-clad roll bar, removable roof panel, and a detachable plastic rear window. In commemoration of the company's success at the famous Sicilian road race, the new model was termed Targa, a term coined by other manufacturers since to describe this body configuration. Since Porsche did not introduce a full Cabriolet until the early 1980s, this was as close as one could get with Porsche to 'wind in the hair.' With patent pending, Porsche officially added the 911 Targa to the lineup in the fall of 1966 as a 1967 model. A fixed glass rear window with a heating element became an option in late summer 1967, and then standard equipment the following year.
CoupePricing for the 911S Coupe began at $15,000 while the turbocharged version had a $28,000 base price. Powering the 911S was an overhead-cam six-cylinder engine with a 163.9 cubic-inch (2,687cc) displacement, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and delivered 157 (SAE net) horsepower at 5,800 RPM. A five-speed manual transmission was standard with a Sportomatic offered as optional equipment. The rear-engine, rear-drive vehicle had disc brakes in both the front and the back, and the suspension was independent all round. Flush door locks were the only visible change for the 1977 model year. This would be the final year for the 911 in the guise, before it was replaced by the 911SC which had a larger 3.0-liter engine. The Porsche 930 was produced from 1975 through 1989. Known by the Public 911 Turbo, they represented the top-of-the-line 911 model during the entire production duration. The turbocharged Carrera coupe, introduced in U.S. form for 1976, received few modifications for 1977. The three-liter, horizontally opposed, overhead-cam engine had a 182.6 cubic-inch displacement and - with the help of a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system - produced 234 (SAE Net) horsepower. During 1977 a total of 4,173 examples of the Type 911 were produced with 6,135 Type 911S for the U.S. market.
