1906 Schacht Model K

Before Schacht turned to automobile production early in the 20th century, they were a builder of horse-drawn carriages and wagons in Cincinnati, Ohio. From 1904 to as late as 1910, the company built a high-wheel gas-powered buggy marketed as the 'Auto-Runabout.' They produced conventional automobiles until 1913 before switching solely to truck production, which they would build at their Ohio factory into the 1930s.

Even though this Schacht has a very early and primitive appearance for an automobile in 1906, it was nevertheless a comparatively popular car. The high-wheel design was very practical in the mud and rut country driving of its time.

The 1906 Schacht was powered by a horizontally opposed two-cylinder engine with a Schebler brass side draft carburetor offering 10 horsepower with power transmitted to the rear wheels via a fiction-drive transmission. The suspension was solid in the front and rear with semi-elliptic leaf springs. The vehicle, with its 65-inch wheelbase, was kept in the driver's control via rear-wheel drum brakes. Unlike some other high-wheel vehicles which used tiller steering, the Schacht had a steering wheel, and its engine was water-cooled.
