• Team USA's Cameron William Receives 'Best Player of the Tournament' Award

Herndon, VA (May 14, 2014)
– After winning the Volkswagen Junior Masters National Championship, SoCal United flew to Rome, Italy, to represent the United States in the Volkswagen Junior World Masters soccer tournament last weekend. Twenty-three teams participated in the two-day tournament, which has taken place in various countries since 2006.

SoCal United advanced to the quarterfinals after a successful first day at the tournament, beating teams from United Arab Emirates, Spain and Switzerland, and tying with Australia. Unfortunately, the team was defeated 2-1 in penalty kicks by Turkey after a scoreless match on the second day. Turkey went on to face Switzerland in the final match, but lost 4-3 in penalty kicks. During the closing ceremony, SoCal United's Cameron William was honored with the best player of the tournament award.

'SoCal United exhibited determination and solidarity against some of the best organizations from around the world,' said Vinay Shahani, vice president marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc. 'It's exciting to provide these talented young athletes the opportunity to compete at this level.'

SoCal United, from San Diego, Calif., earned their spot in the tournament after they bested 15 other U-12 boys division teams in Overland Park, Kansas, in 2013. Each country had a unique selection process to identify the team that would represent their nation in the biennial Volkswagen Junior World Masters tournament.

As a dedicated supporter of youth soccer, Volkswagen has supported the Junior Masters program since 1999 in Germany and 2009 in the U.S. Volkswagen is also the official automotive partner of Major League Soccer in the U.S. Globally, Volkswagen is the title sponsor of the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg, Germany, and owns the VfL Wolfsburg football club at its global headquarters.
