2004 Pontiac Vibe

A popular performer and an important part of Pontiac's ongoing product renaissance, the Vibe has been freshened for the 2005 model year with a new, distinctly Pontiac flair. Introduced originally in 2003, the Vibe marked a return to sporty, fun vehicles at Pontiac. The renaissance continues with the introduction of the 2005 Vibe at the Chicago Auto Show.

Styling changes include a restyled front fascia and a grille inspired by the 2006 Solstice roadster. Like the Solstice, the Vibe's new appearance characterizes the contemporary performance look of other recently introduced Pontiac models, including the G6 sedan, GTO and Bonneville GXP. All of these new products strengthen the momentum of Pontiac's design and performance renaissance.

'The Vibe has invigorated Pontiac with its unique spin on performance and versatility,' said Jim Bunnell, Pontiac-GMC general manager. 'It is bringing to the showrooms new buyers who previously didn't consider Pontiac - or, often, any other GM vehicle. The Vibe is our number one conquest vehicle, which means these new buyers aren't currently driving a GM vehicle.'

2004 Pontiac VibeAdditional features on the '05 Vibe include:

The 2005 Vibe's standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (1ZZ) meets 2007 Últra Low Emissions (ÚLEV II) standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com) The dual-overhead-cam engine employs variable valve timing to continuously optimize performance and fuel economy. It is rated at 130 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque.

Vibe's increasing popularity with enthusiasts is backed by GM with a line of tailored accessories and performance parts from GM SPO, including a sport package that includes front and rear fascia extensions, side skirts and dual spoilers. A supercharger also is available, which boosts horsepower by 30 percent and torque by 18 percent.

2004 Pontiac VibeVibe posted 56,922 sales in 2003 - an increase of more than 45 percent over 2002. Production of the 2005 Vibe begins in May at New Únited Motor Manufacturing in Fremont, California.

PONTIAC VIBE DELIVERS FUN AND PERFORMANCE IN A UNIQUE PACKAGE

2004 Pontiac Vibe
The head-turning Pontiac Vibe entered the market with a bang, with a hip, breakthrough design and high-performance options making it a choice for the young and young at heart. A new supercharger option, XM Satellite Radio (continental Ú.S. only) and new colors mean the Vibe will continue to lead its class in creativity and fun. 2004 Pontiac Vibe
A segment all its own
The 2004 Vibe could be a sports car, a sport hatchback or a mini SÚV-crossover. It's so unique and versatile it has fast become one of the most sought-after small cars today. Vibe's interior roominess and flexible seating configurations take the best aspects of all the categories and combine them with performance to invent its own segment. It's a vehicle that skillfully blends the best attributes of many categories, while enhancing Pontiac's ability to attract new, younger buyers. It is equally adept at carrying cargo during the week as at picking up a date on the weekend.

Bold performer
Vibe looks like it's moving even when sitting still, and when in motion it turns heads everywhere. Its unique, integrated roof rack contributes to the sleek, distinctive wedge appearance. Vibe also features other traditional Pontiac styling cues, such as 'cat-eye' headlamps and a wide, muscular stance. Recessed fog lamps and rear cornering lamps, short overhangs and large wheels and tires project an aggressive, ground-hugging stance while optimizing vehicle stability.

2004 Pontiac Vibe
The base model is full of spunk with a 1.8L I-4, which produces 130 horsepower (97 kw) and 125 lb.-ft. (170 Nm) of torque. This base engine red lines at 6000 rpm, yet still gets great fuel economy - estimated 29 mpg city / 36 mpg highway with a manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The inline four is a front-mounted, transverse design with dual overhead cams. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base engine and a four-speed automatic is available. The all-wheel-drive version is available exclusively with the automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

The high-performance GT engine, also a 1.8L powerplant, is rated at 173 horsepower (129 kw) and can rocket the Vibe from 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in the low 8-second range. The power comes from a combination of changes, including modified heads and the VVTL-i system that increases the intake/exhaust lift when engine speed is high, improving output and fuel efficiency.

The base model gets an even bigger boost with a newly available SPO (GM Service and Parts Operations) supercharger kit. Installed at Pontiac dealers, the SPO supercharger is designed specifically for Vibe's 1.8-liter engine and is fully warranted for the same period as the Vibe. With the supercharger, the Vibe will gain 7.5 pounds of engine boost and an approximately 35-percent increase in horsepower and torque. Combined with either the standard five-speed manual or available automatic transmission, this makes Vibe one of the great small performance rides in America.

Highly flexible interior
It's really a driver's interior. Or is it a utility interior? Driving Vibe is like driving a sports car - but with one touch, the rear seats fold flat, creating a level load floor and 54.1 cubic feet (1,532L) of cargo volume. This makes it easy to load, whether bringing home a load of groceries or moving off to college.

Vibe's cockpit-like interior is tightly laid out to provide a precise, comfortable driving environment. A DVD-based navigation screen (when so equipped) sits atop of the center stack, flanked by stylish HVAC vents. Standing sentinel are audio and climate controls and switches to precisely control the various functions. Meantime, the front passenger seat folds flat into a worktable or surface to accommodate cargo up to 8 feet long. And, Vibe features two 12-volt power outlets: one on the dash and one inside the console box, which allows a cell phone to be charged in a concealed location. The console also contains two cupholders, a small covered storage bin, a larger covered lower bin under the console lid, a cell phone holder and a coinholder.

Many young professionals today need to take their life along with them as they travel. For this reason, Vibe features a 115-volt standard power outlet with a wall-type plug. Located in the front console, it will enable owners to plug a laptop computer, cell phone charger, portable vacuum, air compressor or electric shaver right into the front console, without an adapter. This can open up a whole new world, even allowing passengers to check and send wireless e-mail from their Vibe.

When it comes to audio, Vibe provides a host of infotainment systems, including a standard four-speaker AM/FM stereo with CD player, programmable equalizer and Radio Data System. XM Satellite Radio is available with the Moon and Tunes value package, which also includes a six-speaker, 200-watt sound system and power-operated moonroof. XM Satellite Radio (continental Ú.S. only) provides 100 coast-to-coast, digital-quality channels of original music, news, sports and talk. Consumers can subscribe to the basic service for $9.99 a month - less than the cost of a single CD. In addition, GM customers with GMAC financing can choose to include the XM subscription in their car payments.

2004 Pontiac VibeVibe also offers an available DVD-based navigation system with six-disc remote changer, a six-disc in-dash CD changer and a 200-watt premium audio system with six speakers. The standard sound system features an AM/FM stereo with CD player, programmable equalizer, TheftLock, Radio Data System and four speakers.

Advanced safety features
Vibe provides an array of crash-avoidance and crash-protection benefits normally associated with larger, higher-priced vehicles, with dual-stage frontal air bags and available seat-mounted side air bags. All-wheel drive is available and an anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard on AWD and GT models and available on the base vehicle. Vibe features a large safety cage and crumple zones, with the frame and body panels constructed of high-strength steel designed to absorb energy in a crash and help resist passenger-compartment intrusion.

Front seats have comfortable lap and shoulder belts with pretensioners and force limiters, along with warning lamps that illuminate when seatbelts are not properly fastened. Front seat positions have adjustable upper anchors so the shoulder belt suits a wide range of physiques. Front seats also feature inboard-belt-to-seat attachments so that the anchor point moves fore-and-aft, in synch with seat-position adjustments, for outstanding versatility in positioning the belt. For greater safety, all Vibe models are equipped with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system for child seats in the two outboard rear-seat locations.

Other safety features and options include GPS navigation, remote keyless entry, anti-theft system, child safety door locks, a power window lockout switch, daytime running lamps and delay-entry lighting.

Suspension
Vibe's suspension is constructed for the optimal blend of crisp handling and a smooth ride. The front suspension is designed with a leading-arm MacPherson strut with a high caster angle. The rear suspensions of the base and GT vehicles have a twist beam. This ensures ample wheel travel, improving riding comfort and quietness and outstanding handling and driving stability.

All-wheel-drive models are equipped with an independent rear suspension of a compact double-wishbone set-up, featuring optimized placement of the arms. This suspension improves ride comfort and provides outstanding handling and stability to complement the sure-footedness of the all-wheel-drive system.

The brakes are a vented front disc/rear drum combination - except on the GT model, where they are four-wheel discs with solid rotors at the rear. Vibe models offer three types of wheels - 16-inch steel, 16-inch alloy and 17-inch alloy. Tires from Goodyear and Continental include a 16-inch P205/55R16 all-season tire and an optional Dunlop 17-inch P215/50R17 tire. Seventeen-inch tire and wheels are available on both base models and GTs.
