1999 Porsche 911 Carrera

Production of the Porsche 911 began in 1963 and it was an evolution of the Volkswagen-derived Porsche 356. Conceived as a bigger four-seat 356, the 911 became an all-new car with a new air-cooled, OHC flat-six engine with 1991cc displacement initially offering 128 horsepower. The styling was the work of Ferdinand Alexander 'Butzi' Porsche and it echoed the 356's familiar fastback silhouette. The two-door, 2+2 high-performance rear-engined sports car would undergo continuous development over the years, although the basic design and concept would remain unchanged.

Porsche introduced the 996 in 1997 and it was the first water-cooled boxer 911. The prior air-cooled engine had been used for 34 years. The 996 was produced through 2005; it was an entirely new automobile that captured the character of its classic heritage. The 300 horsepower engine had four-valve cylinder heads and broke new ground in terms of reduced emissions, noise, and fuel consumption. The exterior had headlights with integrated turn signals, at first controversial but later copied by many other automobile manufacturers. It shared its front end with Porsche's Boxster. There was a new cockpit with a greater focus on comfort along with its typical sporty characteristics. The first 996s were available as either a coupé or cabriolet and initially with rear-wheel, or later, with four-wheel drive. Other variations included the club racing-oriented GT3, and the forced-induction 996 Turbo and GT2. The Carrera and Carrera 4 underwent revisions for the model year 2002, receiving clear lens front and rear indicator lights which were first seen on the Turbo version two years earlier. A mildly revised front fascia was also introduced.

The convertible top roof system could be lowered from a Coupe to Roadster in 19 seconds. A rear spoiler raised at speeds exceeding 75 mph.

For 1999, the horizontally opposed, water-cooled overhead cam six-cylinder engine displaced 207 cubic-inches and delivered 296 horsepower. It had a six-speed manual transmission in the rear transaxle or a five-speed automatic. Disc brakes were located at all four corners. Zero-to-sixty took less than five seconds.
