1962 Triumph Spitfire MKI

The Triumph Spitfire, based on the Triumph Herald chassis, became available for sale in late 1962. Power was from an overhead-valve four-cylinder engine displacing 70 cubic inches and offering 63 horsepower. They had a four-speed manual transmission and disc brakes in the front. The suspension setup was the same fully-independent design found in the Herald, but with a new backbone style chassis with a shorter wheelbase than the Herald. It had a welded monocoque construction, a small split grille in the front, and slightly cut-down doors. Center-lock wire wheels became available in 1963. The base price for the 1962 Spitfire Mk I 2-door roadster began at $2,200.
