1952 MG TD

Very few, if any, MGs had been brought to the United States prior to the onset of World War II, so most Americans did not know of its existence. Even the vast number of American racing enthusiasts were unaware of the fourth overall at LeMans, the class victory in the Mille Miglia, or the outright victory in the Tourist Trophy. All of these changes during World War II, as American soldiers were exposed to the MG, and acquainted with its sporty persona. Many returning soldiers brought MGs with them.

Compared to the typical American automobile, the MG TC was very small and weighed less than 1,800 pounds. The 1,250cc overhead-valve four-cylinder engine delivered 54.5 horsepower, and its top speed was approximately 80 mph. Although small and underpowered compared to most other cars on the road, its small footprint made it very responsive and fun to drive. The solid rear axles and leaf springs front and rear gave it a rough ride. Traditional design elements included the gently curved fenders with 21-inch wire wheels, cut-down doors, and build-it-yourself weather equipment.

The MG TD that followed in late 1949 combined the TC's drivetrain with a modified hypoid geared rear axle, the MG Y-Type chassis, and a familiar T-Type style body. An independent suspension using coil springs in front was new, as were rack-and-pinion steering, smaller 15-inch disc type road wheels, and a left-hand drive option. Bumpers and over-riders became standard for the first time. The car was also 5-inches wider with a track of 50 inches and riding on 15-inch pressed steel wheels. The TC's 1,250cc engine was used to power the TD and was backed by a revised four-speed transmission. Thus, the performance was about the same, although the ride and handling were vastly improved.

From August of 1951, a larger clutch was fitted and associated changes made to the flywheel and bell-housing, subsequent cars being known as the TD II.

Nearly 30,000 TDs had been produced when the series ended in 1953 with all but 1700 exported. 1,710 Competition Roadsters were built between 1950 and 1953 including 700 built with a left-hand-drive configuration for export to the United States.

The MG TD may have lacked the power and presence of the larger American automobiles, but on a winding back road, the MG's lightweight construction and nimble handling allowed it to easily stay out front. The TD brought with it extensive modifications and updates that broadened its appeal to a wider range of buyers, particularly those in the North American market.
